I got my Vostro 1500 from Dell a few days ago, with Win XP Pro. It seems to be working out OK, except for one thing that has me concerned:
The Hard Drive makes a 'clicking' sound sometimes. It is fairly quite, but is audible. The sound seems to occur when the laptop is idle (i.e. I am not typing on it, nor is any program running). The clicking occurs once or twice a minute, seemingly at random intervals.
Is this happening to anyone else with a Vostro model? If so, is it normal, or do I need to get the hard drive replaced? I am a bit concerned about this because I am going to use this laptop to write a professional licensing exam in Sept. , and obviously don't want it to die on me midway through the test.
I checked what model of HD was in the laptop - it is a Seagate Momentus 160 GB SATA 5400 RPM. I checked the Seagate website but could not find any information about this.

i would request a replacment mate,
even if its just for peace of mind.
Vista shuts down the hdd when its not in use, but it shouldnt be that frequent. -
Clicking on Dell notebook computers has been around for years, my 9300 model has been clicking away for years. I think it has to do with the model of the hard drive also. Could be harmless, could be an issue.

The Toshiba in my 1400 hasn't made a single click noise.

I had the same segate hard drive on my 1420 and it made the same clicking sound. I got a replacement and it had a toshbia drive which does not make the sound.

I have the 120GB version of the Seagate and mine does the same thing. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
