Does anyone have a 100GB 7200 rpm HD from Dell? Does it run noticeably hotter than a 5400 rpm HD? Is it noticeably faster?

I sent my computer back in b/c I was having issues so they are sending me a new one. I noticed that the new one is going to come with a 7200 rpm compared to the 5400 rpm that I originally had. I'm obviously not going to send the new one back (unless the same issues come up), but was wondering about any heat issues.

It's not gonna be noticeably faster as the difference between 4k adn 5k is a lot more dramatic than from 5k to 7k rpms. The heat might be a little more, but depends on ur laptop and how small it is and how well it discipitates (sp?) heat.

this is my first 7200drive in a laptop (m1210), and honestly I dont see a huge diff compared to my older 5400 in a D810. This is day to day stuff, but when I back up my HD to an external drive, things seen to move a tad quicker...also scans (virus, registry, spybot) I think if you have the cash to spend, go for it, but if you are tight on $ and need space more than speed, just get a bigger 5400.

I have always noticed big performance improvements going from 5400 to 7200.

I really haven't noticed any heat or noise issues with my 7.2k hard drive. It is noticeably quicker than the 5400 in my old Latitude C640, but that could be due to the faster processor and more RAM too. I don't think you'll notice a HUGE difference, but then again some people say you will. My physics teacher said he noticed a huge difference when he upgraded to 7200. Either way, you're getting it for free, just be happy. I haven't noticed any heat or noise problems that would make me want a 5400 instead.

Not trying to sound mean and everything, but this topic has been discussed several times. We also have a sticky dedicated to it in our hardware forum, so please continue the discussion there. It gives you the differences between the 5400 and 7200.

    Closing thread.
