Hi, I was just wondering if it was possible to upgrade the hard drive on the dell mini 9's to a larger NON solid state drive, or do you have to put in a solid state drive for it to work?

    thanks for the help

They use PCI-e slots of the SSDs so they are limited as to what they can stick in there.

thanks for the info, does that mean you can only put solid state drives in there or can u put a regular drive in there assuming it has the correct connection (or do those not exist?)
    thanks again

Just the SSDs can be used with the Mini. They have 32GB out now and are working on 64GB soon.

There is virtually no space inside the I9. Really, the only thing that can physically fit inside the case is a PCIe SSD, and even these have to be shorter ones.

These are the type of drive that will fit in the I9:

    No problem.

I've been dying for a 32 gigger ever since I got my I9. I just don't know if it's worth putting the money into this little guy.

Believe me. I really like my I9. It's just that I paid so little for it, it doesn't make sense to turn it into a more expensive machine.

    Yes, that's true.. :D

I don't mind putting a bit more of $ into..I've got some giftcards to use up at Dell, and some Newegg coupons, so that helps me out a bit!!! :D

I want to increase the size just a little bit more!

What sized SSD is in your I9?

For me, the size of my 4GB isn't that bad. I'm not really adding anything anyway. What's killing me is the write speeds. I'd love to unclog that bottleneck. I feel like it's the only thing holding this machine back from being perfect, for me.

Maybe I'll just pick up the 16GB one.

She's got 16gb right now :D...So I can go up higher! I've been perusing Newegg alot for this very reason! ;)

And, I agree on the write speeds!

You should get that extra 16gb :D

thanks for all the info guys, mick i agree with you, i am trying to get a netbook and stuck between the mini 9 or the msi wind, i have consider the hp since it seems a mix of the two and offers the larger spinning platter HD's but i dont think it is as hackable as the mini 9 or the wind

that being said, i asked this because im at a stalemate between the better battery life of the solid state drive in the mini 9 and the larger capacity hd's available/hackable on the msi wind, if anyone wants to weigh in on this dilemma that would be sweet

thanks again for all the helpful info

It really depends on how you plan on using the computer. If I was going to try to make my netbook my only notebook, I'd probably buy a Samsung NC10. As a secondary device, I'm very happy with my Mini 9.
