Just got a M1530 about 2 weeks ago. And swapped in a WD 320GB drive (got one of those SimpleTech externals for $80.00).

Anyways, it seems like my HD is always getting accessed. I don't mean, my HD is in full use all the time etc.... But there is always something going on, I can hear it, and I can see it on the HD light. I am not sure if this is what people refer to as the "clicking" sound? I do not have anything running in the background, etc....

Any insight on this would be great.

May be it's system restore. In the task manager->process->select columns and then choose IO read and write. It will show you which application is accessing it.

Vista search index is one possibility; alternatively, are you using firefox 3b5? The latest invisible-update wrecks HD access with the options-security-forgery/attacksite detection. Just turn them off and you'll be happy again.

Ah sorry, I am using XP. But you maybe right on the System Restore, I might have turned that off. I will double check that. Which I always turn off Indexing and System Restore.

SuperFetch, Indexing Service, Background Defrag, BootLoad, etc all uses the HardDrive...

VIsta is to some extent a very efficient system (e.g. defraging/indexing during screensaver, preloading the most commonly used apps into the ram for faster access...)...

Anyways, my theory is, any unused traffic is wasted traffic, so as long as the HD usage is not interfering with your normal operations (they shouldn't be, for Vista automatically suspends those services when you, say, run a game), you shouldn't worry about them.

But of course, you can always disable them (Google for procedures), but your Vista experience is then likely to reduce....

i'm in the same boat, with vista 64 though, and turned off indexing and will see how it helps. just all that churning that it does is so annoying, as its a 7200rpm drive that keeps clicking around 24/7 as my room is quiet or i'm slowly passing out
