I placed my order for the Dell XPS M1530 last week. I ordered the 160GB 7200rpm Seagate Hardrive. I'm wondering because it will give faster seek times but the 250GB 5400rpm drive has a larger density thus clawing back some performance loss.

So its a tradeoff in either direction, and I'm wondering should I have gone for the latter 5400rpm drive or will the 7200rpm drive just ween me that little extra performance.

(I am worried about noise of course it would be nice if those with 7200rpm and 5400rpm SEAGATE DRIVES would give a comparison, from what I've heard its the same).

It will definitely lower the battery ops a few minutes. As for noise, Seagate is not too noisy, Hitachi 7200s are.

yh i have this ame problem, go with a 250 5400 or a 160 7200, will there be a big difference in performance.

From what i have read 7200 wont decrease the power much.

Not much, just a couple of minutes. A performance difference is only noticeable if you use it for some really hdd swapping apps. Even games won't benefit from the 7200RPM, just load times will be a bit shorter.

I went with the 160 7200 (arrives today), as I see my hd being a bottleneck on my existing laptop. I move a lot of decent sized files around so the additional performance is worth it. Plus a NAS solution for other stuff and I'm all set. 160GB is hardly small. :)
