Just a quick question, what type of hardware upgrades can one do to the studio 15? I'm not referring to the upgrades that Dell allows you to do when you order it, I'm referring to once you've bought the thing, can you run it with dual drives or replace the drive with a 7200 drive? Anything else that can be replaced or improved upon that one can do themselves?

You can replace the HD with another one. You could also upgrade the RAM.

No it will only accept one 2.5" laptop drive.

Mine was not out of the box more than an hour before I had the base off and fitted a WWAN card. You can:

Upgrade the CPU (if you know what your doing and use the service manual)
    Upgrade the memory (2 slots)
    Add a WWAN Card
    Add/Remove the Bluetooth functionality (card)
    Add/Change/Remove the Wireles Lan (card)
    Change the hard drive.

These are all fairly easy for someone with a little knowledge of computer innards to do. just remember to ground yourself before touching anything in there, to avoid killing stuff with static dischage.

Can you install a 7200rpm drive replacing the 5400? Are there more heat issues running at that speed? I've changed desktop hard drives many times before and it was very straight forward. Are there any bios changes that have to be made for the new drive to be recognized?

Yes the hard drive can be changed to a 7200 rpm model without any issues. It shouldn't produce that much more heat.
