Just to let you know on one point, unless there is a leak or a mixup, Dell usually keeps things underwrap until close to the day a new model/line is released.

...Dell had charm? ;) They're just recently finally able to make a reliable notebook. 3 years ago, Dell's were worse than eMachines. My buddy had a Dell he had to send back in 3 or 4 times. I had to get my eMachines repaired only because I was overclocking the video card too much. Dell's XPS series are quite good in their brackets... they just don't have any truly good 14" or 15" machines with this their current lineup.

Dell never had charm in my opinion, but they at least had something good to offer. I never found my Latitude or my school's desktops to be as bad as my cousin's eMachines... but maybe that's just me. But you are correct; Dell has a long way to go in their 14" and 15.4" category, which is the most popular right now. Their consumer line is losing all kinds of traction against HP, because they're about the same price with about the same reputation, but the HPs look 10x better, if not more. They really need to step it up with some new designs.

I say patience. We know Asus is involved with Dell and we know they hired to guy who designed the Rzer for Motorola. But, it is tough to say whether we will see real changes for the upcoming Santa Rosa notebooms. I do say upcoming, Dell like to keep things underwraps until they are very close or at their release date. At the same time Dell is almost always one of, if not the first out of the starting gate. But all we can do is wait and see.

I personaly think dell has one of the nicer designs for notebooks, I really like the inspiron design. plus I don't think anyone can match dell's bang for the buck when it comes to home/personal notebooks once again, its the inspiron line. So for me its a winner, looks + bang for the buck, sounds like a great deal. I don't know if it has (or ever had) any special charm, but I also don't think anyone else has it, except maybe for Apple, but then again, they deliver fairly low $$$ for hardware value.

Haha, same thought path. Charm? What charm? Well, besides the price(which is unbelievable at times), it's held top spot for bang for the buck.

I only buy business laptops, and if you do a little shopping, you can find HP and Lenovo laptops that are much more price competitive than the Lattitude line up. Just be sure to spec them the same and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, I think Dell has lost its charm and edge!

Look at HP. They come out with their new laptop few weeks ago.

The last laptop I bought from Dell was the D620 and the screen was HORRIBLE! I had to return it 45 days later and I got hit with the 10% penalty.

Dell never had charm. Dell was not the first, but one of the first original equipment manufacturers that allowed consumers to customize their computer over the internet. It was a big deal because customers could configure their computer, obtain a price and buy a computer quickly over the internet.
Laptops from all manufactures seem to have a high failure rate compared to desktops. Trying to fit everything into a tiny 11.1"-17" case does not always produce the best results. Especially with overheating. Dell is not the only laptop manufacturer to sell defective laptops.

If you were to do that today you would be hit with 2 different 15% fees. One is for restocking and the other for refurbishment or something like that. Plus you would have to pay to ship it back. I estimated that if I requested for a refund for my laptop today that I would lose nearly $700 of the $2000 I paid for it.

My Dell diatribe... BTW they have no charm, though they may have a clue, or at least they may be getting one.

I bought an e1505 a few months ago and have been having a running battle with these guys over Vista verses WinXP. I didn't want Vista so I installed a store bought copy of WinXP and just figured I'd add the necessary drivers from Dell and all would be OK. Fat chance... So far I've gotten two different lists of drivers I need to install from them. Along with that, they included the sequence they should be installed in. Of course these were different too... Loaded the first list, as directed... an audio problem raises it's ugly head, so my Skype is useless. All it delivers is noise after a short period. So I contact them again and whine about getting a WinXP driver disk for the e1505. Once again they tell me to pound sand, in no uncertain terms... So I load my last volley into the biggest gun that I have. I point out to them I've purchased about 10K in Dell equipment at work in the last two months. Including my pride and joy 390 desktop that tipped the scales at $4900! Just had to have that 1.5 Terabytes of storage... I made it clear in no uncertain terms either they cough up the disk or I buy nothing from them and I was willing to wait as long as they wanted. They replied with their usual, "go pound sand" response. Then the next day... lo and behold, someone at Dell does have a brain. Someone jumped in and said all they needed was my address and they'd have it to me in 3 to 5 days. I really hate having to resort to these tactics but hey, you gotta fight the battle with what you have and that was all I had... an economic blockade. These people can be so pigheaded about stuff. It's a stinking driver disk for God's sake. What does it cost them... maybe a buck? Yet they'd dump a very good customer? No wonder they are having troubles, dumb don't come much dumber than this dumb... Do the math boys!

Now whether it fixes my audio problem is yet to be seen but I have to at least have the drivers to have a chance. What I don't understand is my daughter's 6400 (same as the 1505) works just fine except hers was ordered about a month ago (newer) with WinXP, rather than Vista.

Often popularity/price dont correlate with the true value of a laptop. I am a student at UCSD and sony is by far the most popular laptop i see around. Yet when you look at the price/specs ratio you see that sony is simply overpriced. Its popularity is a cultish thing. Dell on the other hand does a good job with its price/specs ratio yet it has a reputation of being the peasants laptop. Personally i think at the moment sony can only be criticized for not expanding its xps line to 14"-15" monitor range.

Ok ok agreed.. Dell didn't hv charm n wil probably never have cuz its not willin to listen to customers.. but i'm talkin abt giving some sense to dell managers..
First thin is that their inspiron line is too thick n without the new stuff like numeric keypad in 17 inches.. no webcam.. no fingerprint reader.. no sleek design which looks like trend of new generation.. The fact is that we are too bored of lookin at that same design over n over again.. Even if u brin the new processors n new chipsets n new technology in the same design,, ppl wont buy the new laptop with same design cuz it wil look exactly the same as the 2yr old laptop.. instead ppl wil buy somethin tat wud look new... i mean fresh look

Secondly the 15.4 inch which is undoubtedly the most popular category.. Y DOES DELL IGNORE THIS CATEGORY.. They dont have XPS line for 15.4 inch n they have very very poor graphic card option.. ATI X1400 n NVIDIA 7300((( Not even 7400)))???

All this is makin dell fall in popularity n sales

Anyways im still a big fan of dell n i love my one yr old inspiron 9400 which hasn't given me any probs.. n i trust dell build n im surely gonna buy a dell again next month if dell change their design n come out fast wit new santa rosa..
