Phoned up Dell UK today (via India of course) to enquire whether Vostros, and specifically the 1700, were available with XP instead of Vista...it seems not :(.

So I was wondering if anyone has been told different and been able to order XP with their machine?

You can order XP Vostro's from dell, but only on the 1500's.

That Sucks, I wanted XP instead of Vista. But here in Norway they only offerd the Vostro with either Vista Business or Ultimate.

No sense at really..the bang on about 'we've listened' etc and then don't offer it on the most expensive model.

I'm sure it could be made available but it's just not on the reps sales config screens.

Reasons for a 17", well I'm very much used to a 15" 4:3 and the from what I've seen 15.4" isn't the ideal jump.

I'm going to be installing XP Pro on my Vostro 1400 when it arrive. I really don't want Vista Home Basic.

Well perhaps it's dependent on a couple of things, where you are in the world and what they'll offer you. Second, the sales rep you get on the phone.

Difficult to negotiate/bargain when the computer says no. ;)

i should have ordered XP with mine, but i did vista, just so i would have it to use if it actually improves after SP1. well i am having second thoughts about running XP as of now because dell doesnt have all of the drivers for things like bluetooth and touch pad or wifi catcher and stuff. so i think i screwed myself :( as of now anyway.

This is exactly the thing, I'm not touching Vista until after SP1 at the earliest. I just don't need the additional headaches, when I'm looking for (some form of) stability.

I don't see why I should be forced to purchase it as standard especially when Dell made such a big publicity annoucement about re-offering systems with XP only a few months back. Either offer it across the range or don't bother.

I'll probe them again next week.
