I would also be interested in this,

used to love mucking about with osx x86 on my ho dv6000.

The guy who used to release it though has been poached by the mac dev team now though, so dont think there have been any more recent osx x86 versions or work arounds made available.

Im not sure if were really allowed to discus this though on here

I dont think it is illegal or something since there is already a wiki on it here :

    http://wiki.osx86project.org/

Also many popular sites have been giving information on how to carry out the installation of OS X on x86 machines....

Macs since a year ago now use Intel processors -- so they are just like PCs under the hood. There are some minor protections to prevent OS X from running on non-mac machines, but the osX86 project has worked around them. PCs can't run the old PowerPC processor based version of OS X, but they can run the newer x86 one (what all new macs will ship with from now on).

The DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent copy protection (at least for all of you Americans out there). OSX86 teaches you to bypass Apple's TPM check. You be the judge...

It's OK to talk about it as long as you don't share links to torrents and such.

You can read more about this at http://forum.insanelymac.com/ . The Inspiron 1501 apparently could run OSx86 so I don't see why you couldn't (theoretically) run OSx86 on a 1420/1520/1720 ;]

I don't understand why Jobs just doesn't release at least a strip downed version of OS-X he would really compete with MS especially with all the bad press with Vista

    1) apple is a hardware company... they make great software to sell their hardware.

    2) apple is a control freak, because they only primarily make software for their own hardware, problems are minimalized. So if apple sold their software (OS X) to hardware vendors (btw dell said they'll gladly sell OS X if they can) many issues would arise...drivers...drivers...crashes..incompatiblities...etc. Apple believe user experience is #1 (think about the great experience users get when they see/touch/listen their apple products) and they cant reproduce that experience on a DELL....

I'm 98% sure that OSx86 will work on all of new Inspirons, except the ones with Geforce 8xxx GPUs. They haven't been able to reverse engineer the nvidia kexts for them yet. Also, the Dell 1390 wireless card works with OSx86, but the intel 3945/4965 chipsets do not.

Is this thread going to get us into trouble? ;)

*Ahem* I did try to install Mac OS X on VMWare before and kept getting stuck at an ACPI missing driver. It is technically possible to install on any x86 systems sans legal problems.

Potentially, though it's a very interesting topic indeed, I think possible legal issues will result in this thread being closed. Though there are a few very good forums on the net on this topic :eek

Actually it *is* illegal to install OSX on anything besides a Mac.

I never agreed to the Mac OS X EULA, I just bought a software license and then installed said software on my computer with a customized install disc.

It doesn't matter what you do, the end thing is that OSX on anything but a Mac is illegal. I'm going to close this before anything erupts. There are other forums to go to, to discuss this, I'd recommend going there.
