I bought my XPS 1530 on December 15, 2007 and just received a call two days ago from a very nice customer service rep at Dell, asking if I would like to take advantage of their extended warranty plan.
She said I would be getting a 50% discount if I made the purchase at that time over the price on the website. So I said "okay". I signed up for a 4 year deal from the time my original warranty expires--effectively covering my laptop for five years--for around $289. This was just the standard warranty, not the one that covers accidental breakage such as the screen. etc.
She put me on "hold" for so long that I had second thoughts and figured I would check the prices on the Dell website to see if the 50% discount was accurate. When she finally came back on the line, I told her I had decided to change my mind. I am certain she was a little irritated.
I checked the warranty prices on the Dell website, if it is included in the original purchase, and found them to be about $380 (4 years from date of purchase) for the same deal. So my question even though the deal is not quite as good as stated by the rep, the price is better than when included in the original purchase.
Has anyone else jumped on this deal and if so, are you satisfied. I might just call them back and try to get a better deal.
Thank you for your input.
One happy owner of an XPS 1530 with no screen issues.

I normally abhor extended warranties, as they are a rip off. With that said, extended warranties are not bad ideas with laptops since components cannot be easily replaced if something goes wrong, and usually something does.
I wouldn't get that long of warranty. Do you honestly believe you will be using the same laptop 5 years from today?
Get three years (total) max or less dependent on how long you plan to use the laptop as a primary device and how expensive the warranty is. -
my XPS M1530 just came about a week ago. im going to buy another warranty, probably a 4 year plan. what warranty did you see for $289? there is a four year warranty that covers accidental breaks and theft for only $99.

I did not see the $289 quote on the website, it was just the price I was quoted by the sales rep. I could not get a quote on the Dell website for the extended warranty after the sale for the recently purchased XPS.
I also have an Inspiron 9300 which my son uses and the quote on the website is $169 per year which is a little steep for a laptop bought in 2004.
Has anyone with a Dell XPS 1530, bought an extended warranty when called by Dell after purchase?
