    A couple of years ago, one could configue 1920x1200 screen on the consumer laptops, now high res screens seem to be available only on the business precision machines.

    Has dell dropped high quality screens from their consumer line?

    Define "high res" and "consumer".

    Yes, it seems like you can't get anything better than 1366 x 768 in all of the bottom-of-the-barrel Inspirons, but you do have the option for 1080p in the XPS 15 and XPS 17, 1600 x 900 in the M15X, and even 1920 x 1200 in the M17X...

    Of course "high-res" and "high-quality" aren't quite the same thing, but I'd venture that Dell's never really had "high-quality" screens, except for the now largely impossible to find RGB LED displays in SXPS and Precision line. I had a WUXGA display in a D830 some years ago... and it was pretty mediocre.

    On the other hand, the WLED displays on the new XPS 15 are supposed to be quite good.

    EDIT: I lied, you can get full 1080p on the M15X as well.

    The WUXGA screens while not super-awesome, were pretty decent.

    I should have excluded Alienware.

    Is the XPS 17 offering 1080p? I only see 900p on dell.com

    High res = 1920x1200 or 1920x1080
    Consumer = Inspiron/XPS

    WOW.

    The XPS 17 does not offer a 1080p screen while the XPS 15 does. That's relatively odd.

    But yeah, there's nothing better than 900p on any of the Inspirons, but then again, I doubt there's much better than 900p on any other manufacturer's Inspiron-comparable units.

    The HP DV8t has 1920x1080, and it is a very nice screen (apart from it being like a mirror)

    I really wish my 14R had a higher res than 1366x768... This doesn't belong on anything larger than 12". But nothing other than built to order boutique style laptops have proper resolution screens :(

    Yeah, but I'd say the DV series is more like the Studio series which Dell has dropped completely. The G series is more like the Inspiron and those don't have anything better than 900p.

    It's still fairly subjective as to what line is comparable with what, though.
