Some uses on CNET think that Dell may have recently upgraded/switched the 17" screens on the 9300 and the xps becouse of leakage/sparkle complaints. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

i think no matter what the size of the lcd screen is there will be light leakage. but i think the sparkle effect is just one of dell's lcd specs. cuz on the other brands like sony, fujitsu, toshiba i havent seen any sparkle effect or little. so it doesnt necessary mean they have to upgrade to the 17 in. it is just better

I agree with azntiger...light leakage is the norm for LCD, its not just specific to Dell. I've noticed that the sparkle complaints have gone away. I really don't think they've upgraded to a better LCD, but I think they either fixed the problems they had with the LCD or users got use to the sparkle effect since it has been out for so long.

This may be old news, but....

There are two manufactures of the screens, LG and Samsung. From what I've gathered, LG's screen sparkles, while the Samsung's whites aren't very, more like a light shade of grey.

I called up Dell to request specifically I get the Samsungy screen, and while they couldn't do it, they did confirm that my screen is from Samsung.

i'd rather the colours be off than to have perfect colours but can't read text.

Hey, thanks a bunch except I chintzed out and got the low end X300 64meg video card. I won't be gaming much, and I can live with crummy grfx if it means I get to play anywhere and still have a laptop pricepoint I was willing to swallow.

But it's good info to have.
