I had to reinstall Vista on my Inspiron 1720 because my cat knocked the computer off of my table onto the floor, taking out the hard drive. I picked up a WD 160gb hard drive and went about reinstalling Vista. I was constantly having trouble getting Vista to boot after installation. I did some searching, and found that it's apparently an AHCI problem. I disables AHCI in BIOS and Vista booted finally!!!! Now that I've got Vista up and running, how do re-enable AHCI?

There is an option to load the driver before installing the Vista. You probably have to re-install to get AHCI to work. If you enable AHCI in your BIOS, you probably will have problem with Vista.

there's a driver for it. You can install it while installing vista if you know what to do, otherwise you can install it afterward. I believe it's a part of the intel chipset drivers. Once you get your drivers on simply enable it again in BIOS.

Edit: Apparently you have to install the AHCI driver during installation of Vista by pressing F6 as setup begins, then inserting a USB stick or floppy (USB floppy I presume) with the AHCI driver (intel matrix storage driver) on it.

Before you try that though, you could always try this post install solution. If it goes south you were going to reinstall anyway.
