I have read a lot of threads about people saying that a motherboard replacement will make the headphone noise and cpu whine go away.

First of all can anyone say if this is true? I was chatting with CSR from Small Business and he said that I needed a motherboard replacement and that it could easily be fixed.

That video shows the CPU whine on the 1520. A guy responded and said that a motherboard replacement by a Dell technician removed both the headphone noise and the cpu whine.

I also wanted to know, does Dell send technicians to colleges? I ask because my Vostro 1500 has some problems which need to be fixed but I'm moving into my dorm room tomorrow.

I have the CPU Whine problem on my XPS M1210. Every single part in the system has been replaced and the CPU whine is still there.

Did anyone get a laptop without the headphone whine? I heard the only way around it is to get usb headphones. Also, I watched that video and though that noise does come from my brand new 1520, it is not NEARLY as loud. Only if you really listen for it then you can hear it.

3 vostros and a motherboard later it is still there just got it back from the depot. I even sent the creative head buds along with it. (they never made it back) I just turned it on and guess what - it still has a high pitch noise, you can even hear it when you play a game it crackles from time to time. It is poor design and cheap parts - they only way to get rid of it is to get a bluetooth/usb headset or usb / expresscard sound card. It is interference from the duo core. I'm going to try to get an expresscard from dell or atleast a discount on it. Vostros are cheap in price for a reason.

I believe it also has to do with the quality of the cable, or plug! I have a pair of the ep630's for my ipod, and they carckle, and pop like nobody's business! I also have a pair of full ear sony's, and........... nothing, no crackle, no pop! same with my sound system, absolutely nothing!

A USB sound card is a good idea for systems that have noise. I bought a Creative Xmod for my work computer, and it works great. No more computer noises. Not a single snap, crackle, or pop. If I start listening to music on my new laptop, I will definately pick up another one.

I don't believe its neccessarily the quality of the cable. I work at a company that has a full recording studio, and I borrowed some very expensive recording headphones they use, and the whine still occurred.

Dell are coming out on monday or tuesday and replacing the motherboard.

I said to the guy on the phone there are quite a few posts on the forums about this problem, and after a few basic tests he agreed with the assessment of people on the forums and said he would organise for a new motherboard to be install.

The guy on the phone said that some of the senior officials in the call centre were already pushing for manufacturing to correct this issue, however, to get manufacturing to fix it they ask for many cases of the problem occuring. So I'd suggest if you get this problem just to give them a call.

Dell technician came out today, replaced the motherboard and the headphone socket connections themselves, no more whine problems :)

Guys it has a lot to do with the EP630 headphones in my opinion. When I used my own, $60 earbuds the noise is almost non-existant.

No CPU whine, no squeaky hinge, and the headphones worked great! No such noise, I can not wait untill i get mine, and i hope i am as lucky as my friend for being delt a spotless 1720!

I have this issue on my 1520. It may get fixed in the 1525, which is rumored to arrive next month. I am sending my 1520 back and going with another company.

Vostro 1500 here - headphone whine. I have tried various headphones too. It doesn't manifest itself through laptop speakers.

I use X-Fi for gaming anyhow with headphones. I just hate to have a mobo replacement and possibly cause more issues.

Damnit, my cpu has this same problem. July 08 and Dell still hasn't fixed this damn whining sound. I just got a brand new pair of headphones, popped em in and bam eeeeeeeeeeeeeebeeepebeeeeepeeeeeeee.

I noticed that the whine goes away whenever the blue hard drive activity indicator is on though. I was thinking about getting the creative x-fi expresscard sound card anyway. You say there is no whine through the X-Fi?
