I've got a Dell 6400 Laptop and yesterday the headphone jack stopped working properly. I accidently touched a 6V power supply off it and the Laptop switched itself off. I guess this was a surge protection method built in. However now the headphone jack no longer works. A clicking noise is heard instead of music.
They stopped working right after the incident with the power supply. There is still sound coming from the in built speakers fine. No problems there. Also everything else on the notebook appears to be functioning normally. I tried several speakers and headphones so they are not what is causing the problem.
Anyone here know what part I may have damaged? Can it be repaired easily or replaced without too much expense?

Are you still under warranty? When my headphone jack stopped working, I had to have the motherboard replaced. The jack is directly connected to the MB, so it is not easily replaceable, but if you call Dell and tell them that your headphone jack stopped working, they will replace the MB for free.
