    Hi All..

I'm a Dell technical support agent. I've been working for dell for over a year in the software department. We're the dudes you gotta pay to talk to. I'll be browsing the forum to offer as much support as I can while I'm at work, but I'm in no way here on behalf of Dell or with their approval. Just here as another members trying to help.

With that being said, I'm debating between the D610 or the Acer C314, I'll hopefully make up my mind within the next few days.. I'm leaning towards the Dell, considering I work for them, lol, however, the Acer is looking real good cause it's also a tablet PC.

Anyways, glad to be at your service :)

Well welcome to our forums, glad to have you. Since you're in the software department, I guess we can't drill you on notebooks. You must get some type of employee discount there right? Or maybe not.

The Acer C314 is pretty nice, the convertible notebook/Tablet PC nature of it makes it a nice dual type of machine, I have an IBM X41 but don't have the Tablet functionality...honestly, it wouldn't be worth an extra $300 for me because I wouldn't use the Tablet PC functions all that much with the job I have now. I don't take many notes or have many meetings or need to draw pictures / sketches. I think you'll get a better deal on the D610 than the C314, and the D610 is great except for the well documented hissing noise you get when you plug headphones in (can you rattle some cages in hardware support there to get that issue fixed on the D610, LOL).

As far as a good career move, buying a competing company's products and bringing them to work isn't the smoothest of moves, if you plan on being a long time Dell employee and want to move up the ranks, well, being a cheerleader for their products probably helps too ;)

    Haha, for sure buddy.

I'm at work at the moment and I just spoke to a person from Hardware, and yes, this is a known issue and supposedly a fix is "in the works". This is not going to be a bios flash or anything of that sort since this is a physical problem, but it will be on the new line coming up replacing the D610. He didn't sound like he was too sure, so don't take this as an official note. However, one thing is for sure, this is a hardware/grounding issue and cannot be fixed by a bios flash.

And yes, we do get discounts, just not as much as you think :) Here in the software department, we support everything that has to do with software/os issues on any Dell platform. We even support non-dell PCs/laptops as long as you have a support plan with us.

As for me going for Acer.. Dell would understand. If we made Tablet PC, I'd go for one, however, since we don't, going for an Acer is not considered competition :)

Any idea if it's true that the headphone noise issue only affects machines with the discrete graphics card?

    Hello,

Nope. I could not confirm that with any of the hardware agents.

As for the Acer Tablet vs Dell, if you really need the functionality of being able to sketch onto your computer, I'd probably get a D810 or D610, and just buy a Wacom Tablet (comes with wireless pen and wireless optical mouse) if I could get that for cheaper. Working for Dell, you're likely to get better tech support, and a better deal. If you don't even need a tablet, but just want one, it's probably not worth the money.

By the way, do you know what Dell's policy is on sending out replacements for batteries under warranty? How bad must the battery be to get a new one?

HamTard, honestly, it'll depend on which tech. you talk to and what sort of tests he'll run. If this is a new laptop and it does not run from the battery, then you're gonna get a new one, regardless. If there is still life in it, you might be responsible as it could be simple overuse.

As for the "lexus" line, it's nothing special. Just the new gens of Dell, with the most powerful componets in it. Check Mr. Dell's PC on Dell.com, it's more like the one he owns.

Thanks for joining us here, DellTech!

I have a question on Latitude X1. Is it possible to replace 1.1GHz ULV processor with the newer one 1.3GHz,
to be on the market soon: is it possible in principle, how difficult it is, can I order this service from Dell in future?

Sorry guys, I wouldn't know that as like I said, I'm software technical support. I can probably get you hardware answers if I cant find the answers myself but customer service is way out of myr each. You're better off calling the 1800 number.

Yeah, you really set yourself up choosing that ID. I bet you can't wait to check the forum every afternoon and see 24 pm's from confused Dell owners needing answers.

Dell Tech, good thing this is an online forum and not a public forum in person.

The crowd would be too sorely tempted to stone a Dell Tech hehehehe Or lynch him.
