    hi

i spilt horlicks on my dell inspiron 5100 and i did as the manual said and dried components such as the battery, hard drive etc and switched it off and allowed it dry for 24 hous later and only the light comes on. i am just worried as i have a lot of documents on that computer and it has been working for 5 yrs without incident.

some ppl say that it is neccesary to open the laptop and wash it other water. is this true?

Even if you can't get the computer working again, you can put the hard drive into a 2.5" IDE/PATA to USB enclosure and plug to another computer to retrieve your documents.

I think Horlicks contains milk and sugar which will tend to mess up the electronics, even when dry.

Thorough dismantling and washing of the non-mechanical components might clear the problem, but removing all traces of the dried muck will be difficult.

It is probably a sign from above that it's time to buy something new. As already suggested, you should be able to get your files off the HDD using an external enclosure.
