My notebook finally got here today. It has Windows Vista Home Basic, so I was going to install the Ultimate version I already had. I slip in the DVD and everything goes fine. Finally somewhere near the end it restarts and gives me the blue screen. It just keeps restarting over and over. Please help! What do I do? Is there anyway to get the Basic back by using the restore partition?
Thanks again,
Chris.

Make the smart choice, go Windows XP.
-
Err... problem solved?

I don't know if it's solved. I hope so.

Thank you.

I dont think drivers are needed if you upgrade, are they?
-
I did a clean install. Also, theres no driver for the mouse there? Anyone know where to get it?

Help, its still happening, everytime I restart my computer!!!!!!!!!!!! the blue screen. it doesn't happen when I shut it down, and then turn it on!!!
-
and talking to tech support about it was a waste of time ... -
The drivers for the touchpad here will work:

i dont think the problem is with your drivers...it might be hardware.. i have the same thing happening to my pc and its driving me insane..but u can do something in the bios to make it go away..restart,f12,bios,in cpu disable speedstep....hopefully your bluescreen will go away...but still call dell and demand a replacement.
-
I guess the problem was I forgot to install some of the chipset drivers, and the memory drivers. Did that and everything works fine now. If this happens to anyone else make sure that you install all the drivers!!! Thanks for everyones help!

I'm having the same problem but I can't even get into Vista to install all the drivers. I'm going to try pgonzo's BIOS suggestion to see if I can get in long enough to install all the dell drivers.
-
try f8 when booting vista to the command prompt this may allow you to do it in "safe" mode
-
I have the same problem when I reinstalled Vista. If I shut down, it will boot up. But if I restart, I always get the BSOD.
-
Hey guys.. seemed to have solved the problem for me at least. I installed the Intel Turbo Memory drivers, system restarts like a charm.
-
What fixed it for me was loading the Intel Matrix Storage Manager during the Vista installation. Apparently you need that if you have AHCI enabled in the BIOS.
-
Yup, the problem was the Storage Manager, Chipset, and Memory drivers for me. If anyone has this problem, make sure they install everything.
-
FYI for me I needed to load the Intel storage manager driver DURING the original Vista install. I couldn't wait to load it once into Vista.
-
You need to install the Intel Matrix Storage Driver found here:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...0&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=-1&impid=-1
When asking you where you need to install it, you need to click on Load Drivers. This can be on a disk, or flash drive or ANYTHING. But if you don't feel comfortable doing this, or just looking for an easier fix...go into the BIOS and disable AHCI and select ATA. There may be a SMALL performance decrease by doing this, it al depends on your situation, but installing the driver is recommended -
I don't get an exe??? All the .exe does is extract some files, how do I install this?
-
You have to put those files on a flash drive and when installing Vista load the driver before picking the partition to install on.
-
How do I load the driver???
-
when you get to the screen where you pick partitions there is a load button to load a hard drive driver (RAID driver, storage manager, etc). Don't ask my why you need to load a driver since Vista obviously sees the partition enough to be able to copy the files to it but apparently you do for it to run stable.
-
Well after I installed the memory drivers it restarts fine, do I still have to load these?
-
I have no idea. I didn't have any issues with the memory drivers being involved. Once I installed the storage manager driver during the original Vista install the problem went away completely.
Personally since you just installed Vista and going back and doing it again won't be TOO onerous a task (especially compared to once you've installed software, transfered files, etc etc) I'd do it now to get rid of any chance of it being a problem.
