    Hey!

I bought a used Dell Inspiron 5100 off of ebay a few months back.

It was working fine the whole time until i noticed there was a tear in the cable towards the adapter to the laptop.

I wiggled it around a bit and it continued to work just fine, until I could smell this plastic burning smell from the top of the cable and the back of the laptop.

I immediately unplugged it, and headed to Maplin for a replacement. We tried loads of cables in store, but it kept popping up with:

70W AC Adapter detected, will not run at optimal perfomance

or something similar, although it was a 80W cable.

It continued to use the last of the battery power, until it would not turn on.

I bought a new one for a Dell Inspiron 5100 off ebay and it arrived today.

I plugged it in and all the lights flashed green, but still would not turn on.

When I pushed the ON button, it just flashed green and orange a few times.
I left it charging for hours, but still didnt turn on, or even get warm

Anybody know how I can repair this? Did the power socket get burnt out with the faulty cable?

All help MUCH appreciated, as I am without my laptop.

    Regards,

    Tom Turner

    NOTE:

This is the sequence the lights flash when I push the on button.

    When no AC Adapter:

    Left and Right - Green
Then right flashes orange slowly a few times,
    Then flashes orange Fast
    Then Green flash

    Then Repeat

    With Cable in:

    Fast orange flashes
    One Green
    Fast orange flashes
    One Green

    then again

what you have there might be an incompatible AC adapter, or a bad motherboard. try using another one. i suggest you go to a local computer shop and ask if they have spare dell ac adapters and try testing it. also check the wattage in your original ac adapter. you should only use the one specified, otherwise this might damage the motherboard.
