I just bought a 16x Memorex DVD spindle and my inspiron 6000 dvd burner wont recognize blank dvds! It will just freeze up for a little bit if I try to burn then tell me to insert a blank disc. Any ideas?
-
It could be a couple of things.I would check on the manufacturer's site and make sure that your dvd drive is compatible with Memorex or if they recommend another brand. I've never experienced that problem, but I had a friend that only certain brands would work on theirs.
Second, you might need to update your firmware if you haven't recently. Another thing (that i noticed happened with mine) is to check to make sure your drive is set to record. Right click on the DVD drive, go to properties, and on the last tab (recording) make sure enable record is checked.
What software are you using to burn?

If you have anydvd or dvd43 installed and are using nero uninstall which ever is installed. Nero does not seem to completely reinitialize the dvd drive. I assume dvd-r(s) work. I had this problem.

I am using nero. I don't have those other 2 programs installed, so it can't be that.
I am guessing I need a firmware upgrade, but where would I get the files I need to perform that?
I have the default burner that comes with Inspiron 6000's which is the Sony D56A. I can't seem to find any support pages for it on Sony's site. -
that is the same drive I have and I had that exact problem. The problem turned out to be the drivers I mentioned. The real problem I think is that Nero doesn't correctly support this drive and something you have installed is probably playing with the drive too. I would bet that this is not the greatest drive though I have to say that now that I have uninstalled the driver I have no problems at all and burn +rw all the time.
Have you run the infotool from nero? Have you uninstalled all of the junk you got from Dell for the burner? (I have)

Well as soon as I got my computer I used the XP Home Edition CD that shipped with my computer to format to get rid of all the factory junk (Dell ships 6000's with clean copies of XP CDs).
So what should I do? Just reinstall the driver? -

As far as I know there is no issues with burning CDs and using Nero. Only problems you might run into is if the files are protected (like trying to copy/burn a music cd)
His problem is more complicated than yours because Microsoft does not include software for burning DVD's, yet it includes software for cd burning. If you can't get it to burn right now, then try installing Nero. After that, if you still have problems, then use my suggestion about the D drive properties.
Most cd-r are compatible with your burner (I wouldn't suggest buying the really cheap brands though. Memorex, sony, etc will be fine), where as dvd's are picky (not sure why). It probably wouldn't hurt to update your firmware (its on the dell's site). You shouldn't have to update it though in order for it to burn. Mine burned before/after I updated my firmware.
Weren't your cds being detected and you were able to burn things? It just didn't burn like we wanted to?
P.S. Conscript, if you need to update your firmware, that will be on Dell's site (under support-->downloads and drivers). I would go to Dell's site and redownload the driver from there. If you used your drivers on the cd, then it might be outdated.

I didn't know you were trying to use DVD's. So basically you have the same problem. Just follow the steps in my first post, and then if that doesn't help, uninstall your drivers for the dvd player and reinstall them from Dell's site. There isn't just one solution to this problem or at least I haven't found it, so we have to try different things. I haven't tried to burn a dvd yet, but I'll try it this afternoon and see what my results are.
Anyone else have any solutions?

I would try some different discs as well. Memorex's quality is all over the place. Sometimes certain drives do not like certain discs for whatever reason. You can uses DVD Identifier to find out who is makes the discs and look them up on VideoHelp.com to see what other experiences others have had with them. You may want to use Windows Update to update your ide drivers. You could try some different software. CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner are both free and work well for basic burning tasks. Good Luck.

Hi,
After I read this I thought I should definitely check to make sure the DVD is set to record. That's what grabbed my attention first besides the subject!
I didn't think it made a difference what I was using at the time and I had just bought them that week ,it was all I had except for one other brand, which I don't remember. Now I didn't think what I bought was cheap in quality. The Kodak Gold always worked great before, although it was only the 2nd time I bought them. They sure weren't cheap to buy.
I had the same problem on my Dell desktop (w/a cheap one I got free w/desktop,no name on it) until I bought that brand. I had the same problem on the borrowed 9300 and 6000 notebooks. So I'm still going to make sure to follow the first steps when I try hooking up my new notebook hopefully in a little while today.
Zazonz,
Thanks, I like that download .It's a nice basic one, I do have something simialer that tells me all the same info but I still don't understand the point of it besides telling you the basic information for your own computers drive. Am I wrong? Or are you suppose to put in a DVD and see what it saids about that??? So if you could tell me what this tool does besides what I've assumed and read, that would help because maybe this one does more than I realize. Yes,I did read all there was on the site, looked at screen shots,etc...there's not much to it and I don't see anything other than it telling you about your own drive. It almost sounds like it wants you to put in the DVD you're using to check it out. I guess that's what I'm wondering.
P.S Is the Kodak Gold considered cheap quality? There are of course all kinds of Kodak ones and I actually chose the most expensive because I liked the Gold and what it said. I've bought many others like TDK, Maxell, name brands and some that started with a V,which I think are cheaply made. At least cost wise they are always the least expensive everywhere and seemed basic to me. I've never tried Memorex.

heart, the main purpose of that software that zazonz posted a link to is to identify the make of the disks and what speed they are designed for and such info. Most "manufacturers" just slab a label on the disks and sell them, while the actual manufacturing is handled by someone else. So to really know what disks you have you use that software. So if you know the actuall manufacturer of the diks you can check videohelp.com, to see what other users have reported about these disks when used with a drive like yours.
I remember zazonz a few weeks ago was saying that the fuji film dvds that are labelled "made in japan" are actually Taiyo Yuden which seems to be one of the best to use. So it the actual manufacturer differs even within the same labeling/selling brand.
I ended up getting some cheap dvds becuase newegg had a combo special on them (100 DVD-Rs 8x for 27$ ... hard to resist []), when I bought a regular 5.25" NEC drive (put it in an enclosure). But I read some user reviews at the time and made sure they worked well with my drive, and they DO!
BTW regular 5.25" drives seem to be way less problematic, and NEC release F/W every now and then to fix media support issues, so generally I am very happy with it. Already burned 15 DVDs and they all work perfectly []

That NEC drive also sells under the label "Maddog" -- yeah stupid ain't it? lol But it's one of the BEST burners on the market -- and it's cheap too!
<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
Never saw that brand!
Ya the NEC is pretty good. It cost me less to get the NEC drive + vantec enclosure than to upgrade from DVD-CDRW combo to DVDRW. and at least this way I got a better faster drive.

Some good and some bad. The 8x FujiFilm DVDs marked Made in Japan sold at Best Buy and elsewhere are TYs. You can get them at Rima.com, Meritline, etc.

Ok! That's what it sounded like. To actually check who the disk is really made by. Manufacturers put labels on all kinds of things and they can slap on the label and be made by them, someone else, somewhere else,etc... Got it! That is the impression I was getting I wasn't completely sure. As for Kodak they are made in different places also. So they may not even be the same. I've got it and you're right.
Thanks,
Heart []
I've got the Kodak link I'll check out also. I didn't look at it yet. I will, thanks!

Can anyone give me a specific link to update the firmware and/or Drivers for the Sony that comes in Inspiron 6000s?
I can't find it anywhere! Even the Dell site for the 6000 has a bunch of drivers for other drives but not this one. -
