I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and the lcd has died.
For a few days, the pink/red hue was covering the boot screen (presumably indicating the backlight lamps were about to go) and finally on Monday - the display cut completely.
I was able to get about 5 seconds of illumination when the windows xp loading screen comes on - and when it eventually loaded, i could see the desktop (no backlight) .. but now can`t even see that.
I contacted Dell e-support - they advised me to connect an external monitor via the video port, which i did. i was then able to see the desktop but window movement was jerky and i cant change screen resoluition or get it out of 16bit colours mode
I then connected my cable modem to the lan port - and it promptly blew up. No apparent damage to the pc though that I could see,
After internet service was restored , i connected the new modem to the laptop (with the external monitor connected) and it blew up too - so much for Dell e-support advice and now ive had to pay for 2 modems and Im losing work.
Clearly, from what I can read on the web, it looks like the inverter board is probably gone, and the backlight bulb (correct me if I am wrong please) I`m not sure about the health of the video card - but here`s the thing -
I bought an international next business day warranty from Dell in the UK when i got the machine. 2 years ago. Now, Dell e support from the UK are refusing to abide by the agreement and give me my next business day cover (i reported this to them on Monday, we are now on Thursday) I think that`s pretty rotten of them.
Any advice on this would be appreciated, and if I have to do all this myself to get the laptop working again, I`d be glad of some tips on how to replace these parts ... I am kind of a novice at this kind of stuff.
thanks in advance to anyone who can help me please.

i have a 8500. same laptop but its a p4m. hmm... you can buy many of the parts on ebay if you are out of warranty. however, if u are still in warranty, just keep calling dell until a nice rep assist u with ur problem. in the past i have replaced an lcd, 2 motherboards, ac adaptor, and a set of hinges all for free. the beauty of dell is its warranty sevice. use it to the max, dont give up.

Ask to speak to a supervisor if you aren't getting anywhere with the customer support personel. That is the best way to get the problem solved. Make sure you take down the name (first and last) to cover yourself if you have to call back.
