    Hi
I received my xps 1210 yesterday... its really stylish and I'm loving it.
But, my lappie is very slow! Even when I'm browsing on mozilla or even doing nothing, the CPU Usuage is 100% always and freezes often. Whats wrong?
I'm going to format the laptop to remove all the junk softwares which might be running on background.

    * I have the XP cd, 1 driver dvd, application dvd,Mcafee cd from DELL - Does the driver dvd from DELL has all the necessary drivers for xps 1210? Do I need to have/do anything else before I start the reformatting?
    * Also is there any way I can verify if DELL has installed the right hardwares as per my order?(like checking the Ram, dual processor, videocard etc)

    Kindly reply. thanks ................. baggi

You have all you need to reformat your M1210, you can also use the updated drivers on Dell's website.

BUT, whatever you do, do not delete the smallest partition on the drive, that contains what you need to keep MediaDirect / Button & software operating properly. My advice when you reformat, just delete and format the largest of the partitions, so you get all the junkware off and maintain all diagnotics/MediaDirect features working.

reformat or check what's taking all the sources away.
It might be something minor you can uninstall

If you haven't already, check out the format sticky on dell laptops:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=67545

This has alot of information that you'll need for formatting (such as partitions/drivers)

I strongly suggest creating a backup of the current drivers on your laptop. To do this, copy your C:\Drivers folder to either a disc or a usb drive. The driver's disc should have all of the drivers for the 1210, but sometimes (especially lately) Dell has been sending out the wrong discs.

In the mean time, goto start-->run-->type MSCONFIG --> go to last tab. Uncheck anything that you don't want to run at start up. You probably have several processess running (ctrl+shift+esc will bring up the task manager and show you how many processess you have running)

yeah.. You've gotta love that horrible Bloatware they have in there. While some people like to just remove programs from the Control Panel. I would also highly recommend that you reformat cause its super clean!

Thanks all for your replies..... was very helpful!

I successfully re-formated my XPS 1210 and its pretty fast now. Media direct is also working fine.

One small problem..... Device Manager>Other devices>USB device
shows yellow question mark(?). I think I installed all required drivers!

All 4 USB ports are working fine though. Any comments?

And, is it any good installing Mcafee firewall? How do you rate this software?

    thanks again

Avoid McAfee if you can. It slows down your machine like crazy.

It could be that you might have a USB device (printer, etc) hooked up and it wasn't installed.
I am not sure if the integrated camera of bluetooth (if you have that) are connected via internal USB, but check to see if you installed them as well.

Try updating XP if you haven't already. Dell uses the XP drivers for USB ports, so you don't have to install anything. It is just a matter of XP detecting it and installing the driver itself.

Yes do what SG said, just right click on the yellowed items and update drivers, and it fixes it... I had this issue and that method worked.
