Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If you're just doing what you say you're doing the T5470 should be plenty. Hell for past few years I've been doing the same thing on a 1.4GHz Pentium M and I've had no problems.

I would save the money and go for a bit more memory or a rainy day.

Yeah the 1.6 ghz should be good enough

Agree with the rest - 1.6Ghz will be more than plenty. I just ordered 1.6Ghz myself. I do everything you described plus I also compile code (I'm a software engineer), and I do a lot of image processing (I'm into photography as well) - and I'm pretty sure I will fine with the 1.6Ghz, because I've done all this before on a LOT slower CPUs.
Amount of memory, on the other hand, makes a lot of difference - you can never have too much of it. -
for those tasks, no need to upgrade anything. -
If he wants to use the laptop for online trading, wouldn't he be better off using 1500 with XP instead of 1400 with the bloated, troublesome and unstable Vista? Besides, a 14" screen isn't big enough for viewing real time quote tables and charts. I kind of think that people should boycott Vista. Microsoft is selling a half-baked OS at an exorbitant price.

And I have to say, as a computer technician, since the last couple of major updates (recently released), Vista really seems a lot more appealing now. It's not at all unstable, it's generally pretty speedy (if you disable UAC first thing), it has some truly useful features (shadow copy on Business most notably), and it is more visually appealing and easier on the eyes than XP. Sure, it's not revolutionary, and it definitely wasn't worth the five year wait, but as long as gaming isn't your top priority, I don't see a single problem with recommending it.
Just my two cents. -
I agree save your money for memory. Newegg always has great deals on memory -
And who's going to pay his medical bills from the back problems he gets from carrying around the 1500 vs 1400?
I personally can't stand my work 15" machine, but love my 14
