I have a 1420, and although my vertical scrolling works fine, I can't seem to be able to scroll pages horizontally. I've tried enlarging the scrolling zone, but it still won't work. I have to click on the scrollbar itself and drag it across if I want to see all of a page.
Does anyone have a solution for this issue?

I'm having this problem with my 1420 too. Any solutions?
Thanks in advance for any help with this! -
horizontal scrolling is enabled, right? I have to put my finger REALLY close to the bottom of the touch pad to see any results...

same problem

You may be able to tweak this.
On my older Dell model, under XP and with a Synaptics touchpad, it's Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings tab > Settings > Virtual Scrolling > Scrolling Region.
Yours may vary a bit due to different touchpad drivers, etc... but it's probably pretty similar.
EDIT: I just noticed that oddly enough, my horizontal touchpad scrolling is working in Explorer and in Internet Explorer, but not in Firefox. Weird. -
^
ditto, my horizontal scroll only works on internet explorer, and not firefox. anyone with fixes? -
Oh, same here! It worked perfectly on internet explorer, as well as microsoft word, but not on firefox. I hope there's a fix to this, seeing as how I refuse to use internet explorer :|

I have the same symptoms as well, maybe we can narrow down the specific hardware that's causing the issues. I did a bunch of searching, tried a few things, and nothing worked in Firefox or OpenOffice. It does work fine in IE.
I've got a D630 with an Alps touchpad using the newest drivers from the Dell website for the D630. -
Odd. I had it disabled for a long time but just to check I just enabled it and it works fine in Firefox. Note that the cursor indicator doesn't change for it though but it does scroll up and down with the touchpad.
-
Scrolling vertically generally isn't an issue, it's scrolling horizontally. My cursor doesn't change and doesn't move location, indicating that it is indeed trying to scroll horizontally, Firefox just isn't cooperating.
-
I kinda realized that. I just checked both. I used a website which I know at what point it required horizontal scrolling and checked it. At first it didn't do it but then I tried again. It does scroll horizontal and verticle for me in firefox. Note that I said that in both cases it isn't changing the mouse cursor at all for some reason but the functionality is there. I did have to increase the horizonal scroll region a little to make it work consistently but it does work. Maybe it is time to compare Synaptics Pointing Device software versions? Mine is 8.2.4.6 dated 08Mar06.
P.S. - My software appears to have a bug that it thinks a mouse is always plugged in so enabling the option to disable the touchpad when a mouse is plugged in always results in disabling the touchpad. Fun. -
Mine won't scroll horizontally no matter how large I make those areas, and besides, it's "working" Firefox just isn't cooperating for some reason. Hunting through the about:config didn't help me either. My Alps version is 7.1.101.6 (it is also labeled Dell Touchpad if that makes any difference).
That's quite the unfortunate bug. I personally like having both enabled, except for gaming. Sometimes it's just more instinctive for me to move my thumb rather than my whole hand. -
Ahh... ic. You have a different touchpad model entirely. There may be an issue with your particular touchpad and Firefox. I thought you might of had a Synaptic touchpad being that someone else mentioned it in an earlier post.
-
Horizontal scrolling seems to be a hit-and-miss type thing. It's really not guaranteed on most applications I've used.
-
I have the same issue on a brand new Dell Vostro 1700.
Dell Touchpad with Alps driver does do Horizontal Scrolling in IE and Word, but there is no Horiz. Scrolling in Firefox only. -
anybody found a fix for this?
-
Having the same problem with my inspiron 1525 horizontal scroll. Works fine in some applications, but not in others such as firefox.
-
I think it has to do with whether your laptop has an ALPS or a Synaptics touchpad. Horizontal scrolling in Firefox works with my M1330, which has a Synaptics touchpad. But it does not work with my 1720, which has an ALPS touchpad.
I have no idea why Dell put the Synaptics in the M1330, but not in the M1530.
It makes a certain amount of sense that the Inspiron would have the inferior touchpad, though I would rather pay the difference in price and get the better one, even with an Inspiron. Even if it cost $50 more, that's $50 as opposed to touchpad frustration for the life of your laptop. -
I have the same problem on my Thinkpad. I can scroll vertically in anything using my Trackpoint, but I can't scroll horizontally in Firefox. However, this does work in IE, Chrome, Excel, etc. This is definitely something I would like to fix because Firefox is my main browser, although this may make me switch to Chrome on a more full time basis.
