Hi. I ordered the 1520 (pretty much maxed out) with the 1440x900 screen as a christmas/birthday gift for my girlfriend. I ordered on 10/25 and the ESD is 11/1. I've been reading the many threads on this forum indicating that the wxga+ screen has graininess issues. In addition, I'm not exactly sure how small text will look on the wxga+ screen. My gf wears contacts because she is near sighted... Anyway, do you think it would be wise to cancel and re-order with the wxga screen (1280x800)? My girlfriend will pretty much use the laptop to surf the web, type documents, play games like sims, and watch dvd movies. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would have opted to wait and try out the system first, but I used a $425 off coupon and it expires on 11/1 so I have to make a decision to keep or cancel and re-order.

i like the 1440x900 size. have never run into text online that was too small to read. i can read everything on the screen perfectly without wearing my contacts as well. the only reason i would say goto 1280x800 is if you plan on gaming a lot. but for the uses that you listed 1440x900 is perfect. when im 1280x800 it seems i always have to scroll horizontally.

i didnt have any problems with graininess so dunno anything about that.

Thanks. I appreciate your response. Would you happen to know the manufacturer of your LCD wxga+ panel? I was mainly concerned about the possibility of the text being too small and also the grainy colors issue... but it is good to know that yours is fine. As for games, she could always lower the resolution if the game struggles at native.

I just wanted to get her something where she can enjoy watching HD videos/trailers at 720P and DVD movies.. and also enjoy surfing the web and chatting on aim.

I am nearsighted as well, and I can't stand looking at any monitor with my glasses on.

My 1440x900 looks awesome, no graininess, LG.
Anyways, here is what you can expect the text size to look like:

Imageshack may or may not resize the image, so just click once or twice on it. Note the text looks a little bit more blurry than it actually is because of the format I used(jpeg)

1440x900 is about perfect... can't see it going any smaller than that... but then, I've not seen the other size... I like the 1440x900 though... seems to be the perfect fit for a 15.4 monitor...

This Dell forum is awesome. You guys are very fast and very responsive. I really appreciate it. The screen shot has me sold as well and I think the wxga+ resolution looks great. The wxga+ does look like the perfect resolution for a 15.4 inch.

Hey dude. Im nearsighted too. I can see up close perfect but far away I need my glasses. But anyway, I have a 1520 with the WSXGA+ screen, that does 1680x1050. I leave it at that setting and I can ready everything perfectly fine. My girlfriend has a 1521 with the 1280x800 resolution, and my old laptop has that resolution too. I'd never go back to that if it was free. Remember you can always set yhour 1440 back to 1280. Id say wait til it comes and im sure you wont be disapointed. At my job we have 100s of LCD screens all rated at 1280 x 1024 but I see people setting them at lower res to get bigger icons all the time. Same goes for laptops. Get the better res and just set it lower, I dont think you will be disapointed. Or she wont that is.

1440x900 is PERFECT. I happened to get an LG screen, and besides for the slight light bleed at the bottom of the screen, it is nothing short of perfect.

I just received the 1520 that I ordered with the WXGA+ screen. The lcd is a SEC3157. There is slight light leakage at the top and some at the bottom.. but it is more noticeable at the bottom. Viewing angles are okay and there is a some grain. The resolution is actually really nice..but i'm not sure if I'm going to keep it now. I was hoping to get the LG screen.
