Hi guys,
Early in June I bought a Dell D630.
Turned the computer on, and the screen was too(ooo) bright and the contrast really poor. After playing with some color calibration tools it did get much better but I could never get rid of extensive LIGHT LEAKAGE from the bottom. The bottom of the screen would always be brighter and fader than the top, which was really annoying.
Called Dell, and they immediatelly aknowledged the problem requesting DHL to pick up the computer.
So far so good, but after 2 weeks they returned the system with the same problem, as if nothing had been fixed.
Please check the following pictures (the colors are not accurately captured by my cheap camera, but the point is the relative brightness in each pic along the vertical):
1) Comparison of my old Dell Inspiron 8600 against the new D630 (so much brightness, even though it has been reduced to minimally comfortable levels. notice how the bottom is so much brighter)

2) Vista taskbar, the color fades toward the bottom due to increase in brightness.

Here's the catch, I got the LG Phillips display:
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 14.1WXGA, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., LGP
(shipped in the earlier systems?)
I am returning the laptop as I'm not satisfied with the screen at all, even though I really like everything else (Vista experience 3.5, 2GHz, 2Gb Ram, 120gb 7200 RPM, integrated video card).
I am willing to buy ANOTHER D630, hoping that the screen will be better. My question are:
- Did anyone else had similar problems?
- Current owners, if you put a black screen such as the windows screen saver, is it UNIFORMLY black? With which screen? (Samsung, AUO, CHO, ...)
A big thank you to the creators of this site, the reviewers and all the posters.

i've got the AUO screen and i got the exact same massive light leakage from the monitor too.
to the point where i have to tilt the panel to like a 135º angle to get a uniform brightness, washed out image. -
wow, pretty intense.
I ordered my D630 the 19th of July, and my screen is fine. -
I think you should call dell up and say you want to exchange the laptop for a new one because the problem is obviously not fixed, and then demand that you be put on the priority queue so that you shouldn't have to wait 6 weeks for the new one.

I have the CMO screen (Chi-Mei) and it is very nice. I ordered around early July.

is your monitor also WXGA+?
i ordered my d630 around july 10th.
elmo: same questions.
also, i've read that the CMO screens can be 'grainy', is there any chance that u can take a picture with a digi cam of the 'my computer window' [with the view set to list]
i wanna find out if i got a lemon, so i can call dell and get something done.
thanks in advance guys -
Hi,I have D630 with CMO WXGA+(1400x900p).It is not the best LCD screen,but its not bad!What I saw here,on notebookreview forums,CMO looks overall better for me,than AUO(D630).Richer colors,less lightleaking,but,it's true,CMO has a bit grainy screen,but nothing worrying...
