Help,Blank Screen, Dell Inspiron 1000

I have a Inspiron 1000 laptop from Dell. Did I mention I hate Dell??? 3 years old + or - a couple of months. I had to delete partitions in order to reinstall my windows xp. Don't ask, long story and my anger grows every time I tell it. I now have a NTFS system (which I'm not really sure I like any better than the FAT32) For the longest period of time (2 days) my programs wouldn't run. I reinstalled or repaired the NTFS system drive and everything seems to run fine. Then all of a freaking sudden, whenever something bumps my screen it shuts off. The screen goes blank (like its off) and my hardrive light is on, but nothing comes up. I have to hard boot it shutdown. then reboot normally and eveyrhting works. I can't close the screen without it shutting off or shutting down. Its not like its in hibernation, its just off. It shuts my computer down. Do any of you know why? I've racked my brain and the tech support has so clue what I'm talking about. Also, I use to be able to put my computer in standby if I was coming right back to it, now I don't have that option. Was changing to NTFS the cause? I would really like to not have to shut it down everytime. (hence can't close the lid because it shuts down, but I can still hear it running...but nothing will come up or work or anything)....

 

ntfs is better than fat32 because it can handle files larger than 4GB and has better security. it also has nothing to do with the problems you're describing.

you don't have to delete partitions to reinstall windows xp; in fact, i'd say most of the people on this forum who have done a reformat have left their partitions intact.

if your screen is literally turning off when you bump it, it sounds like the connector is loose. i would pop it open and reseat the connector.

you don't have standby anymore because you probably did not reinstall all the drivers and updates from dell's site after your reinstallation of the OS.

if your computer is turning off when you close the lid, it sounds like an option in the power settings; you should check there.

in all honesty, the problems you are describing sound like either the cause of your own doing or your misunderstanding of how things work.

 

Its not a power option. I have everything set to Do Nothing or never. As far as deleting partitions, I had gotten a virus/worm at some point during a download (not pirating software, but from the site directly and now has been resolved with the company) and so, I couldn't run the internet (wireless) or download my drivers for my cd rom drive which had been forgotten by my computer. I couldn't pull up anything thru dos mode. Nothing would work. I could start windows, then it would freeze on blue screen. I couldn't enter safe mode or run diagnostics...I tried reistallation of windows xp and repairing the drive, but that didn't do anything(my computer will recognize the rom drive at first boot). So, my next option was to delete that partition and reformat. Install xp and start over. Since then things have been running very smoothly except the monitor thing happening.

As far as standby, I've installed everyting I could possbily find via windows update and dell support downloads and still don't have the standby option.

I will try and see if the conector is loose for the screen. Thanks so much!!!!

 

I had the exact problem all of you are describing, and i'm proud to say that after 7 hours of poking around I fixed it! Here's how (keeping in mind it may be a different problem than yours.. but worth a shot.) It's quite weird, but it had to do with the grounding cable of the screen inside the computer..

The hole it was connected to must have been rusty or something, but removing it and connecting it to the hole right next to it solved the problem. completely!

cut lumps out of the metal plate under the keyboard were the vga lead goes

that traps it and makes the wire bend

eventually they break and evan short

My experience is the DELL INSPIRON 1000.

Same issues that all of you experienced.

I first removed all power sources.

Then I removed bezel above function keys containing model logo, led indicators, and power button.

I lifted keyboard up and forward and let it rest on lower bezel.

Once inside, on left side, I removed a metal shield plate (many screws).

Once removed, I looked in far rear left corner where left LCD mount post is located. Just under it, mounted on circuit board is the external power input jack.

I noticed there is what appears to be a piece of foil sandwiched between this power jack and the LCD mount post.

Using a small, precision type, flathead screwdriver, I pryed the lip of this foil upward toward the LCD mount post, away from power jack.

This appears to be what was shorting out upon movement of the LCD screen as well as when the external power jack may have wiggled a bit.

After reassembling, I now have full swing and functionality of the LCD screen and computer without a problem.

THIS FIXED MY PROBLEM... i put some isolating tape on the top part so the foil will never touch again... be sure you put in something fireproof... you wouldn't want your notebook to burst into flames next time you charge. THE LCD WIRE ITSELF HAS NO DAMAGE....
