I just purchased a Vostro 1700 and I plan on upgrading the ram myself. I configured the system from dell to have only 1GB of ram. This is my first laptop so I'm not sure if there are 1,2,3,4 slots for memory. Also is it likely that my dell will ship w/ 2x512 or 1x1gb or memory? If I wanted to go up to 4gb would I need to discard the memory that comes with the laptop?

There are two RAM slots. On the Vostro 1700, one slot is accessed by unscrewing a plastic cover on the underside of the laptop. The other is under the keyboard, and you have to remove the keyboard to get to it.
There are some instructions here

Dell will ship 2x512, so you will need to replace both modules. -
