I just purchased a Vostro 1700 and I plan on upgrading the ram myself. I configured the system from dell to have only 1GB of ram. This is my first laptop so I'm not sure if there are 1,2,3,4 slots for memory. Also is it likely that my dell will ship w/ 2x512 or 1x1gb or memory? If I wanted to go up to 4gb would I need to discard the memory that comes with the laptop?

Yes, but don't throw it away (or toss it). You can resell it here or to someone who needs 1GB of memory.

Most laptops have 2 DIMM slots. So for your laptop, 2 slots.

Depends on what you configured it for. Check your invoice, and if it says "1GB Shared Dual Channel" then you have a 2x512MB kit. But after checking Dell's website, it seems like they only offer 2 modules per choice.
