Just received my Vostro 1500 a couple of days ago. Today I hooked up my SimpleDrive external hard drive to it and a message popped up telling me that data transfer would be much faster if I connected it to a high-speed USB port. Then it shows me all of my available high-speed ports. Well, as far as I know all of the USB ports on this thing should be high-speed. I decided to transfer a few files over as a test and it is definitely slower than it should be.
What gives?

What OS are you using?

That message has only popped up on my outdated HP desktop. I've never encountered it on either my parents' newer desktop or my previous laptop.
-
Is it updated to SP2?

Hmm does the same hard drive work in USB 2.0 when connected to any other system capable of ?
-
Hmmm that's weird then, my friend has been using XP SP1 and always complained about the slow USB and how mines is faster, and apparently he didn't know how to upgrade to SP2. Once I upgraded it for him, it was quick at regular USB 2.0 speeds, so I assumed you were in the same situation.
As mentioned above, the external HD works as USB 2.0 on other ports, correct? -
Yeah, it works as it should on my old laptop and my parents' desktop. Right now I'm going to run all recommended Windows updates, though I doubt that'll help. I found this thread over here with a search -- http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=117270
I suppose I could try what was mentioned in post #3.
I also sent a support request to SimpleTech. I never have high expectations for company support though. -
Check device manager to make sure the drivers for the USB port are installed...
If you installed XP regular and then upgraded to SP2 the enhanced USB controller is probably still saying it doesn't have drivers in Device Manager. Just go through it and tell it to automatically find the drivers and all should be well again.

Everything looks good in device manager:

And to clarify, my laptop came with XP Home SP2 pre-installed.
Help: USB ports not recognized as high-speed (??)
