    Hey guys... looking for advice:

My Vostro 1500 arrived today and this is a very nice laptop but they gave me a WSXGA+ display instead of the WXGA+ I ordered.

On a side note, I also returned the Inspiron 1520 I ordered with WSXGA+ because the of the graininess issue and this Vostro has no grains at all, it is a crystal clear beautiful screen but it is not what I ordered. I really want the WXGA+. They offered me $300 to keep this system and I told them I'd think about it but will not be happy. If I order a new system it will take about 3 weeks to arrive..................... damn this is a rough situation.

What would you guys do, any tips, other options? I guess I would be happy if I could return this system and get the right system with a $300 discount and an extra 9 cell battery thrown in but the guy I spoke to said no.

Well if you didn't pay more... and even get $300 discount... Why not keep it?

Your screen is beautiful! So why accept the danger of getting a bad screen again?!

    Keep it :D
You got a better screen at a lower price! I wish I was as lucky.....

Yeah and it's not like you can't downscale to 1440x900.

With a beautiful screen, I'd have that trade off instead of graininess.

Which of the screens (AUO/SEC/CMC) did your 1520 and your new Vostro have?

lol ... $300 is sweet but 1680 x 1050 is too small. I like to lean back and surf the net sometimes. I really want the 1440 x 900 resolution.

I am SHOCKED at how crisp this screen is though compared to the 1520 I returned. Its night and day - if anyone has a grainy screen, exchange it, its worth it.

With taxes it came out to $1925 Canadian I think.. includes the 3 year complete care warranty. $1459 original price before taxes and warranty add on.

Now you guys got me thinking I should keep it but this resolution won't make me happy in the long run. But damn this laptop is really sweet.

wow, thats what you call rare. The fact that dell messed up and gave you something better and the fact that you resent it... lol.

There are some people in the world resenting their grainy WSXGA+ screens and you just sit there wanting to return something perfect.

    lol

Up the DPI and make the icons bigger. You can increase the font in Firefox and IE. I would be happy to have a mix up like that. I almost when with a 1500 and that screen, but ended up ordering a 1700 instead.

Keep. Change resolution, adjust font size, do whatever, but definitely keep it and pocket the $300

    ^Or that :)

    Yes cdn.

    About changing the resolution:

It works fine, but some applications are a bit distorted. The bigger problem for me is if I increase the DPI, when I plug into an external monitor at 1280 x 1024, it looks very poor. It's gonna mean a lot of restarting. I use the 19" external for a large part of the day and at night I go back to strictly the laptop screen.

Why don't you just change the resolution in windows ? Is there something that I am missing here ? Just because you can go up to 1000000x1000000 doesn't mean it has to stay there....

Well the native resolution is 1680 x 1050. Anything less is blurry.

No. If you keep the aspect ratio, changing the displayed resolution to 1440x900 or 1280x800 is fine if you use cleartype. Anyone who uses an LCD monitor can experiment and see that there isnt much of a loss if you change resolutions.

And thats for text. If you arent talking about text, you wont even notice a difference. Unless your screen was made in 1987 or something.

Keep this Vostro because it's very likely you will get a crappy screen again if you send it back for a new one.

um... no. for an LCD to change resolutions it must scale the image. it basically has to blur it to display it. if you do anything with graphics, it would annoy the crap out of you to look at. it's very noticable unless it's a full screen game.

Thats what I'm afraid of - but I can't tell myself that is a good reason. The screen is very beautiful, its like a smooth silk.

Sorry guys if I keep going on about how beautiful this screen is, but compared to the 1520 I had, I just can't believe how different this is.

So you got a better laptop for the same price and they gave you 300 dollars? Is it 300 dollars off your laptop or like just straight cash or a credit?

Don’t change the resolution, that won't be sharp as the native resolution. Change DPI instead. If you are using Vista, then changing DPI will give you much better results than XP. Check this out : Windows Vista DPI scaling. Check the various screen shots with different DPI settings. I think 120% should be comfortable enough for you.

You can check the manufacturer of your LCD from Device Manager. Go to Monitors > Plug & Play Monitor > Properties > Details (tab) > Hardware ID (Combo box). It should say something like Monitor\XXXXXX. Where XXXXX denotes the model number (SECXXX: Samsung, AUOXXX: AU Optronics (AUO))

And forgot to say. KEEP the notebook ! ;)

Ya they would refund me back $300 to what I already paid.

I really like 120 - but the problem is when I plug into my 19" 1280 x 1024, 120 DPI is way too big. So every morning I would have to restart, and then after 5pm, I'd unplug the external monitor and have to restart again to go back 120.

The hardware ID says MONITOR\LPLF300. What screen is that?

Dont think too much about it, you got a perfect screen, and some extra cash for your trouble.
A couple of restarts a day cant be that big a waste of time with a new computer like yours, i assume.

Alternatively, take the $300 off, sell the laptop on ebay for big profits and buy something else from someone else.

I say you keep the laptop and get the fresh $300. You can always sell it for more on Ebay. Your profit may double. maybe later on.. you can re-order a new one.
