    The two SATA formats are compatible with each other. As long as you don't go get a PATA drive, you will have no problem with this upgrade.

    The harddrive upgrade will work.
    I am currently using the Hitachi 7K320 in my Dell E1505 right now.
    The E1505 and the inspiron 6400 are identical systems
