So, i had installed windows xp on my vostro 1500...there were only 2 partitions, c:[2gb media direct] and d:[148gb]...i used partition magic to merge the two partitions...dell utility said that there was no bootable device presentlater on , i tried to fix the mbr in the recovery console, then finally deleted the c: partition(since i did not want media direct)..when i insert my bootable disc, it just says inspecting hardware configuration and a black screen is on forever

Do you still see the dell logo? If ever try to boot to the XP cd and then try to reinstall again.

i see the dell logo, however when i try to boot using the bootable disc, it just shows me a blank screen and stays there forever

Try restoring the system to its factory defaults (press Ctrl-F11 when you see the Dell logo). If it does not work, you have to reinstall windows since the MBR has been corrupted.
