So, i had installed windows xp on my vostro 1500...there were only 2 partitions, c:[2gb media direct] and d:[148gb]...i used partition magic to merge the two partitions...dell utility said that there was no bootable device present :( later on , i tried to fix the mbr in the recovery console, then finally deleted the c: partition(since i did not want media direct)..when i insert my bootable disc, it just says inspecting hardware configuration and a black screen is on forever :(

Do you still see the dell logo? If ever try to boot to the XP cd and then try to reinstall again.

Try restoring the system to its factory defaults (press Ctrl-F11 when you see the Dell logo). If it does not work, you have to reinstall windows since the MBR has been corrupted.
