I’ve got a question regarding a new Dell Inspiron 600m that I purchased about a month ago. Since day one, out of the box, my laptop takes about 4 - 5 minutes to completely boot to the desktop (My old Dell desktop PC took about a minute and had a slower processor, circa 1999). Also, when I try to run Internet Explorer immediately after start up it will take about 2 minutes to open. Any suggestions on how to remedy these problems? I’ve already run Norton Speed Disk to no effect.

Unfortunately I didn’t do the wise thing and reinstall the OS on the laptop out of the box from Dell. Could all the extraneous junk that Dell places on its computers be the reason for the tortuous start up speed? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

    Here is my computer profile:

    Dell Inspiron 600m
    Intel Pentium M
    1.5 GHz processor (GenuineIntel Family 6 Model 13 1.5 GHz Stepping 6)
    599 MHz
    256 MB RAM (66% Utilized)
    Hardrive: 30 Gigs
Bios: 27d4081a Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A14
ATi Mobility Radeon 9000 Video Card
Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 Mini PCI Card
    Windows XP Home

I have an Inspiron 600m with similar specs, although my processor is 1.6GHz and the memory is 512MB. Now, although memory will help you with bootup, a shortage of it shouldn't result in the 4 - 5 minute boot up you're seeing. There has to be something wrong with the hard drive or memory you have. Or both. It takes less than a minute for my Inspiron 600m to boot. I had problems with the graphics settings being incorrect for the particular screen I had, so Dell was sloppy in that regard.

You really need to contact Dell and report this, it's a definite hardware problem and not to do with the amount of stuff Dell installs up front.
