I have my first laptop coming any day and from what I heard about people's palm rest getting discolored, I looked around and found the following.

It's a company that custom makes protectors for PC's palm rest and keyboard areas. DELL is one of the manufacturers that they specifically make them for. Every model of Dell laptop is listed under the list of what the make. Here's a link to their page:

    http://www.protectcovers.com/laptop.htm

Here's a review for them I just found that was done here on notebookreview.com in September and archived:

The review also covers their screen protector.

The keyboard protector, obviously, covers the keyboard area as well as the palm rest area that everybody is complaining about getting dirty.

I don't want the cover over my keyboard or the touchpad.........so, I'm thinking that I'll get one and just custom "cut out" the area that would cover the keyboard and touchpad before installing it. Then, the rest of my area that everyone says gets dirty and discolored will stay clean.

    How does that idea sound?

Also, The laptop I have coming has a MATTE screen (I hate glare). Should I get their screen protector for that? Or is it only needed for the glossy coated screens? Or would the film do something to the matte screen that would be bad if I took it off later? Sorry if those are stupid questions, but I never had a laptop before. :)

It depends on the size of your laptop. I got both of the covers for my 17in, and it doesn't work out very well. If you have a 1405, then the keyboard cover should do very good. It will feel very weird at time though. On the 1505/1705, I'm not sure if the protective cover will cover all of the silver area. On mine, it barely went to the speakers, and went across my power button.

Not sure about the screen cover. I recommend that if you do it, to remove your bezel (silver part around the screen with the dell logo). This is because you have to remove the paper before you insert the protector, and when you try to insert it with the bezel on, there is a very good chance that you'll get glue on your screen.

I know alot of people, including myself, that think the screen protector is a waste. It doesn't really help out that much.

In my first post, the second link is to a review done by somebody on notebookreview. There are a few pictures of it on the computer. I couldn't tell it was on it.

Sadly, the cover for my inspiron 1150 warped and stretched. If you're any kind of frequent typer, the key fittings wear down quick and start to bubble. If you're night, that left hand-rest part will also stretch warp just from the heat of your skin. I have a silicone cover for a toshiba satellite, and I wish they made them for dells. There hasn't been any warping with that, even if it only covers the key part.
