I read this on a dutch forum. A guy ordered a Studio 15 and he did not want to use the Vista installation.

He read in the Microsoft policy:

    Source.

So he called Dell and he got the money back for Vista and Works. Now he's using Windows 7. Dell said he did not have to send back the Vista software.

100 euro for Works + Vista

Prices in Europe tend to be a lot higher, so 100 euro equates to about 100 US$.

I guess this has something to do with the anti-trust suit in Europe with Microsoft right?

I thought the same. But going by the US phone number it seems to be valid in US too.

Wow, thats surprising! It reminds me of the man who sued HP because he did not agree to the Vista terms and actually got his money back and ended up using Linux I believe. Don't quote me on that though...hehe. :)

I wonder if rejecting the Vista would make you ineligible for the free upgrade to Windows 7.

So how would they ship out the system I wonder... Would they just send it with blank HDD(s)?

I can see an argument from the OEM if you call them after receipt of the system and tell them you want your money back since you uninstalled the OS and say installed Linux instead. 'Sorry loyal Dell Customer, we can't provide you with a refund for the OS since you turned on the machine'... ;)

What Dell really needs to do is answer the IdeaStorm suggestions and provide an option to configure the system without an OS.

Just a thought - very nice find though. Worth a try.

Honestly, that just sounds sleezy...I would never do that just to save maybe $100-200. Why not haggle it down in the first place over the phone.

Well, in that case, he got to keep his Vista copy. Plus, he sidestepped the whole paying for an OS by using the Windows 7 RC, which is still Windows. I dunno, I guess I'd feel different if he put Linux on there, but this is different.

I dont know about dell, but I ordered my T400 from Lenovo with PC-DOS license. The computer shipped with a blank hard drive and no windows stickers anywhere on the computer. The price was $125 less than it would have been with Vista.
