Hi guys,
I just received my laptop (XPS 1210) over a week ago and I've been having some issues when I close the lid and it enters hibernation/standby. After some time, it decides to turn itself back on, which is troublesome especially when it is in my bag because of heat issues. I've tried various things. I searched for this topic and did not find much. One suggested a patch from microsoft that fixed a problem where the power manager device would not allocate memory for hibernation in laptops with over 1GB in ram, but that did not change my situation. I've also tried turning off my wireless card before I close my lid but still, nothing changed. The amount of time until it turns back on again seems quite random to me at this moment, and I can't seem to find a pattern. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks everyone.

right click on your battery meter, adjust power settings, advanced > when close lid...chose what you want it to do. thats it. been covered a lot here.

Thanks for the reply, but that is not my problem. I have it set to go into standby when i close my lid, and it does so. However, after a period of time it wakes up unexpectedly and I don't know why.

Buttons may be hit when it moves in your bag while moving. I guess you could set it to enter hibernation after 5 minutes of idle, or you can make it more secure in your bag to make sure it dosent move. You know you could just turn it off when its in your bag too. Mine only takes about 20-30 seconds to boot up so its like its on hibernation all the time.

Thanks sheff, but it happens regardless of whether its in my bag or not. Even if its just sitting on my desk.

I think I can help you with your problem. Try this:

Well then theres your answer, that looks like it will fix it. I would get it but I never use hibernation, its even off on my system. I just have it on or off.
-
but why dont you use hibernate? its so much better than turning the whole system off cause its a lot faster and you can keep stuff open and everything
-
My system boots up and loads so fast it really isnt a big deal to me. Yeah I guess I could keep a word document open while I moved my notebook. But when I can turn it off and save that little bit of power, and have it open again in a minute, I just choose to have my system on or off. Plus having hibernation disabled give you a little bit of disk space, and its one less thing that the system has to support at start up.

ya i guess its just personal preference. like i like to use hibernate, whereas you dont

One reason for re-booting occasionally is to clear your memory. Windows and applications can have what are known as memory leaks. They grab memory to use for some function, but don't release it when they're done. Re-booting clears memory and loads only what's needed, at least to start with. Whether you need to do this or should do this depends on what you're running. But if you have the odd crash or freeze, try turning the system off at night and see whether it makes a difference.

Thanks pedrodd, but it seems that this is for computers that stop responding when you come back from standby or hibernation, but mine doesn't have that problem. My laptop wakes up before I open the lid again, it won't stay in standby/hibernation.

cant hurt to try it
-
ok, i'll give it a go

Unfortunately that didn't work
. I just can't think what would be causing my laptop to wake up like this. Any other ideas? I really appreciate all the help so far.
