When I removed the hinge/power button cover on my 1720 to install a bluetooth module, I discovered three "buttons" under the cover next to the media direct button. Does anybody know what these are for? Could they be put to use with a case mod? They're little rubber nubs just like what is under the power and media direct buttons...

No these are definitely NOT leds. They're rubber and black and to the left of the media direct button. The leds are to the right.

Heh. Well they are wired to something. I can see the circuit lines coming from them. Wonder what would happen if you pressed them when the system was turned off.

You could press them when the system is on. That plastic piece doesnt need to be on to use the computer (just remember which one is the power button). You have me curious now as to what they do.

Be sure to wear your safety glasses when pressing those unknown buttons. They could be the hidden self destruct keys we were never meant to know about. Or perhaps they signal super fast and efficient tech support. :)

Is it just me, or do they appear to be part of the keyboard? Along with the LED's and other buttons? Like I can't see the lip of the keyboard where the keyboard ends. It's up above the power buttons and LEDS.

And if that's the case. Likely the keyboard is used in other systems which 'use' those buttons.

B2, I was thinking the same thing. Since a lot of the Dell's use full-size keyboards, I bet a lot of them are probably interchangeable. It's much easier to be able to use one keyboard for many systems.

I bet it's the same board for like the D820 or something. I had 2 volume buttons and a power button where those are on mine. Could be cost savings using similar boards.
