Have any fixes for the whine come out yet? I think im going insane hearing this noise... Its less noticeable (though still noticeable) when im not plugged via AC.... anyway... is it too late to ask for a replacement?? I've had it for about 3 weeks now.

No, it's not too late. I've had it for more than 4 weeks. I just called them, and they will send me a replacement. It's that easy. I thought I need to go through some troubles following some steps if they "try" to fix it.(ie. disable this, enable that, download this, uninstall that...) Thank god the guy I talk to didn't. He just said the best thing he could do is order me a replacement, and that's it. It didn't take more than 5 minutes. :D

One fix that worked for my Vostro 1500 is as follows (this does not require to disable the C4 mode):

    1. Get RmClock
    2. Go to advanced CPU Settings then to Platform 1
    3. Instead of disabling C4 Mode, uncheck the Enable Popdown mode and Enable Popup mode.

I don't know for sure if this consumes more battery but the whine is completely off.

I tried this, thanks. It certainly reduces the noise from the line in/out, but I am still hearing it, especially when I record with the line in.

Edit: I've just noticed the whine seems to stops entirely when playing games. It's just there in Windows.

its hardware issue as it has already been said.

No need to run some 3rd party software that only hides the problem and doesn't do a good job at it.

Get Dell to fix it. I just got my Vostro 1400 with no noise what so ever while my other v1400 has noise.

Trust me, even with the RmClock patch, its NOTHING close to an actual systems thats noise free/

I should be getting a replacement (V1500) due to the noise as well. However, many people here are saying they got their x replacement but still with the whine. Another person here is saying it's a motherboard design issue and is not fixable at the moment. So not much hope left.
On the other hand, this issue should be either rare or dell support is just a bunch of liars as all the four reps a talked to have apparently never heard of such an issue before.

I just got off a long chat with dell, didn't sound good. He had me replace my audio driver but of course that did nothing. He told me to disable wireless but no luck there. I don't hear anything other than what I'd call interference through through the headphone jack.

I might add I have bad tinitus (sp?) so this extra noise sometimes just blends in and other times drive me friggin nuts. Anyway my question..

How do these sound and will it cure it?

oh yea, I have a 1500, large battery and bluetooth FYI.

The guy basically said since you are out of your 21 day period your screwed - neat.

10/26/2007 11:57:48PM Brandon Miller: "same thing, extreme interference"
10/26/2007 11:58:33PM Agent (SMB_Efrain_164382): "Ok, do you have another item near? like a cell phone, sometimes cell phones creates interference."
10/26/2007 11:58:42PM Brandon Miller: "It's bearable if you crank it up but you still hear the cd interference etc"
10/26/2007 11:58:53PM Brandon Miller: "nope, and this has been like this since day one"
    10/26/2007 11:58:54PM Agent (SMB_Efrain_164382): "Ok."
10/26/2007 11:58:59PM Brandon Miller: "no matter where the laptop sits"
10/26/2007 11:59:04PM Brandon Miller: "different headphones too"
10/26/2007 11:59:15PM Agent (SMB_Efrain_164382): "This issue is from day 1?"
10/26/2007 11:59:16PM Brandon Miller: "you don't hear it out of the laptop speaker though"
    10/26/2007 11:59:19PM Brandon Miller: "yes"
10/26/2007 11:59:36PM Brandon Miller: "I use this daily though and I didn't want to send it back"
10/27/2007 12:00:05AM Brandon Miller: "happy otherwise"
10/27/2007 12:00:29AM Agent (SMB_Efrain_164382): "That's the problem Brandon, in the first 21 days you can request a system exchange but not now."

So you only hear interference from using headphone, not laptop speakers? I don't think this is the CPU high pitch noise because the noise should come from the CPU, not speakers.

are you using bluetooth headphone? have you tried a wired headphone?

You can try disabling all the audio enhancements from the sound option. alternatively update/try another bluetooth drivers.

If these don't work then your headphone jack might have crap out on you, so call dell get it replaced it's covered under warranty.

I haven't tried wired speakers, I'd assume it would be the same though. I have not tried bluetooth headphones - that was my question, whether they would have interference or not..

if the problem lies with the headphone jack, then yes you shouldn't get interference with bluetooth headphone. But do try to get hold of a wired headphone and see if the problem persists.

Also, try disable all audio enhancements if you haven't done so already. The virtual surround / loudness equalization etc settings can cause static noises when used with headphone.

what do you mean wired headphone. That's my whole point, my wired headphones have a whine..

I tried checking the "enhancements" but none were checked

ah sorry, i thought you have been using wireless headphone.

Since you have no problems with laptop own speakers, but only with headphone, then your headphone jack is probably malfunctioned. In that case you have to replace the motherboard and it should be covered under Dell's warranty. Else, you just have to suck it up and use alternatives, i.e. expresscard soundcard, usb, bluetooth etc.

    yes

it's always there, more obvious if you put in a cd etc

Thank you Brandon, Dell Engineering is aware of the issue and currently there's no solution for this issue. A board replacement will not resolve it
    10:14:52 AM Agent SMB_Antonio_167664
Correct, it's interference: CPU C-state transition -- or from components such as the system fan and the hard disk drive.

Ok I'm a little bit confused, are you hearing the noise from your laptop
    or from your headphone?
If it's the former then yes your CPU makes a stupidly annoying whining noise that can drive you nut. It has something to do with the processor switching power states.

You can find a temporary fix by disabling certain power state (IIRC it's C4E) using RightMark CPU.

if it's just from headphone, not laptop speakers or anything else, then as far as i'm concerned it has nothing to do with CPU C-state transition the dell guy suggested. He probably took it as another CPU whine problem just to keep you away.

it's either broken headphone(s), broken headphone jack, or another noise problem i'm unaware of.

maybe someone else has other ideas.

Have dell replace the motherboard or if you are within exchange period, exchange it.

Why are you settling with RmClock and so forth?

I had Whine and RM clock only did a real poor job at lowering the clicking but the hissing was there big time.

I got a replacement and it is DEAD SILENT.

I just wouldn't settle for something like that, that's just me though.

i been using rmclock for about 3 months now no major problems so far. At times I need to manually start it on startup but thats no big deal. I have heard of a fellow notebookforum user who had problem with freezing, i think it might have something to do with your CPU. I have a M1710 with a T7400.

I posted this before and this is the setting i used.

    http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?t=3516

I actually only disable C3E instead of both C3E and C4E power states as suggested in guide. Not sure why I decided upon that, I think I probably did it by mistake in the first place, but hey it works for me.

from what I heard the occurrence of this high pitch whine is quite random. you can have the same hardware spec. but only some people have the high pitch noise.

count yourself lucky if you got one without. :)

been using Vista Premium on a dell 1210 with t5300 here. no problem for 6+ months!

My advice to you all is, DL RMClock and live with another program starting at startup. if you cant, buy another product. Dell doesnt care until you stop giving them your money.

I use to get the whining noise really bad on Vista but I recently installed XP and I get no noise whatsoever. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, my sound quality actually got better.

Im on a 6400/e1505 and I hear a noise whenever my cpu is underload. lets say I am running scan disk or HDtune. I also hear the noise when I have my ear phones on.

Everyone keeps saying the noise happens when the cpu is going idle and yet mine happens when its underload.

if you can't stand the noise (who would!) and within your exchange period then get it replaced. But there is no guarantee there won't be a problem with the replacement though, at least you get a second chance.

also have a question what should i tell them, why i want a replacement (so they won´t be smartasses and tell me no). what is the best way to do it - over the phone, internet chat with support, email ??

    thx a lot guys

I get the quickest results with chat - they'd probably send out a prepaid box for you to swap with. That is what they are doing with my MB.

Honestly I can live with mine but it is under warranty and I will atleast TRY to fix it.

when you tell them do they send you a motherboard and expect you to install it yourself, or do you have to send back your computer?

it depends on your warranty. if you have a next business day warranty, then an onsite tech will replace the part for you (next business day means the next day after onsite tech receives the part from DELL) but if you have the return to depot warranty, you have to send the system back to DELL for repair...

it really depends, i mean sometimes there are instances that after sending the system for repair, the problem is still there after receiving it. inform Dell that they should test the system before sending it back to you.

DELL is just a piece of a crap. i tried to call there, no success. i tried to contact my "manager" , why he canceled the replacement order. no luck even there. sending it back tommorow and rather buy a lenovo or hp or toshiba than this piece of a crap. you buy it and afterwards you can take care of it on your own.
