I just started playing L4D. And monitored my temperatures.

    My GPU was getting 88c
    CPU was getting 98c

    Aren't these dangerous temperatures?

What can I do about it?

    I'm using an Inspiron 1520
    8600m GT
    2.0 Core 2 Duo
    Vista

The GPU temperature is a bit high but nothing too serious.

The CPU, however, is extremely high.

Yeah, but you can probably reduce temps...Make sure your system is free of dust and make sure none of the vents are blocked.

Also, check out the Cooling Central for tips.

Wow. CPU was 98C??? That's pretty hot. After troubleshooting (use compressed air to clean out the vents, see if any vents are blocked, etc), if the temps are still high, if you're still in warranty, give Dell a call and say that your computer is shutting down due to high temps - you're not that far off anyway (Intel thermal threshold is 105C). That's still way too high though.

If you're out of warranty, you can try to do a copper mod to try to reduce GPU temps, and undervolt your CPU to reduce heat.

The copper mod guide is somewhere on the XPS forum, and flipfire has a great undervolting guide in Aftermarket Upgrades.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably get a fan soon. And maybe clean out the vents... But man, why is it only that game that does it. Strange...

I even turn on the fans to 100%.

Btw, what's the max temp for CPUs? I got 95c instead. Is the max 70?

Most modern Intel mobile processors have a temp threshold of 105C. At that point, the computer will probably freeze/bluescreen/force shut down due to heat.

Weirdo is correct. Modern Intel chips know when they overheat. They'll start throttling (slowing themselves down automatically), or force the computer to shut down.

    Mine shut off at 101C.

How old is this 1520? Might be a good time to pull it apart and reapply thermal compound to the CPU.

Also see about getting I8kFanGUI and running that to force fans to full.

And while you're disassembling everything, get a can of compressed air and blast the dust out of all the vents, fans, nooks and crannies.

and if your internals don't look that bad when you are in there dusting, I would seriously consider getting some artic silver and re-seating the cpu.
