    Hi guys,

I just recently received my XPS M1530, and I'm a first time Vista user.

I have a question regarding the Vista startup. After the desktop screen appears, and the CPU has finished loading everything, there is some hard disk activity for around 5 minutes. The hard disk activity goes up to 100%.

Is this normal with Vista? Why is this happening ? BTW, I've turned off the search indexing thing. Also, I still have the McAfee Security Center which I will be uninstalling soon.

    Thanks for the help.

It's normal, I believe it's the superfetch loading things into memory...I think, but I'm sure someone will correct/agree with me shortly

    Hi dgnr,
Vista tends to frequently check the hard drive even after it appears ready to use. If you are experiencing 100% hard drive activity, it may be related to services/applications running in the background. There is no need to worry unless it starts to affect the performance of the system. If this is the case, call the software support, and they'd be happy to take a look.

    Yeah,

This just happened to me yesterday for some weird reason. I checked Resource Monitor (from Task Manager) and sure enough, it was mainly Vista doing something (lord knows what, but it wasn't search indexing). There was also some Mcafee scanning going on in there. I left it for 5-10 min., then came back, and my HD was back to normal.

    No worries... ;-)

    A note on this thrashing:
If you check the task manager's Performance tab as the computer boots, you can see prefetch filling up your ram. (All of it goes to "cached")

OK, so I guess this is normal then. Thanks for the replies.
