I keep hearing this very faint, high pitched hum on my Vostro 1500 that was about to drive me crazy. I read all the posts about the screen brightness, the power usage, etc. Adjusting these things did not work. But I have found out that when I run my computer on battery, the hum goes away. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and if there is a solution? Thanks.

That is the sound from the processor. Some have an obvious high pitch noise and some don't. I returned 2 notebooks beacuse of that hum. My current notebook doesn't have that hum (atleast not audible in a quiet room unless you hear it very to the keyboard.

Anyway there are hell a lot of threads regarding this high pitch sound. Go ahead search them now...

The problem has to do with the Core 2 Duo CPU, I think. From what I've read, the fix involves flashing the BIOS (an upgrade that always makes me nervous).

the reason it goes away on battery is because the cpu will then run in power saver mode. and you are not pushing it as much as when plugged in, and yes its the cpu

I have found that the CPU hum is only on in "balanced" mode. On either max power or max battery, I do not hear the hum.
