    Hello,

Just picked up my new Dell E1505 :D I'm typing on it right now, as a matter of fact! I've only had it an hour or so, and haven't reinstalled MCE or done any of the tweaking that I plan to do (will do that tomorrow night), but I'm being annoyed by this constant high-pitch noise!

It's mostly on in the background, rather quiet, but it's not always the same - it's constantly changing between quiet and clicky with lots of little high bursts in between. I assume this is the hard drive - why is it so noisy? Is it just that it's doing something in the background I'm not aware of?

I'm used to having my hard drives click, but it's normally not so high-pitched, and it's normally not so constant!

Anyway, I'll be back with further impressions, if you want :D will be playing Oblivion on it at some point, so I'll let you know my findings. Also: how do you adjust the fan? The bottom is getting a little warm for my lap, and the fans aren't turning on.

Are you sure it's the hard drive? Might want to check and rule out the battery/AC adapter issue. Due this by:

    1. Use battery power for a bit. Get under 90% battery time remaining.
    2. Turn off unit and plug in AC power adapter. Wait several minutes and see if you hear the noise.

    Just a thought.

Battery/AC Adapter issue? That sounds bad :(

Well, I'm on battery, and I'm in the process of wearing it down to 90%. Do I then subsequently have to turn it off and then plug in the AC adapter, then wait a few minutes?

I just noticed that the sound is coming from the speakers - it stops when I have music playing, for example.

Is this a known issue? I hope I don't have to pay shipping if I have to send it back to Dell for a repair :( do you know if they'll just give me a total refund, or do I have to exchange for the same?

Thanks for the info, btw :D I'll test t he AC thing as soon as it gets to 80% or so.

Well, the sound still plays through the speakers even when muted -

But if I mute the speakers, and have some audio playing in the background, the sound goes away! Pause the audio, annoying sound comes back - play the audio, annoying sound goes away. Even when muted, so you can't hear the audio whether it's playing or it's paused...

    I think I'm going to e-mail Dell support :(

Also: doesn't seem to be related to hard-drive usage after all (and the hard drive makes its own, separate sound, anyway).

Sounds like it might just be radio interference. . . have you tried using the laptop anywhere else?
