I just received my E1505 3 days ago and after the set up, it was producing a "high pitched" sound constantly from the hard drive. I called support immediately and after 1 hour on the phone, it was decided that the hard drive needed to be replaced. Received the new hard drive and replaced it, but still emitting high pitch sound. Spent another hour with support and again, it was determined that the hard drive be replaced again.
Anyone has the same experience? Should I just returned the laptop within the 21 day period if the third hard drive still emits the same high pitched sound? Thanks!!

I have the same sound that you are describing but I dont think I have it nearly as bad as you. when I listen closely, it sounds like its coming the graphics card. I usually have the tv on so it really doesnt bother me but if you were in absolute quiet for some time, i can see how this would be annoying. -
High pitched sound disappears when Media Center is on. But comes back when I close the Media Center. It's annoying and is causing me a headache. Don't know if replacing the hard drive (again) is gonna change anything.

more than likely wont change. My first machine was a E1705 which I was finally able to get Dell to take back (was a nightmare dealing with it though).
It could be the CPU - has to do with idle, load, etc. Do a google search or search the forum here. Several have reported it. Try this - disconnect from the AC and run under battery power - surf the net using wi-fi. More than likely you will hear the thing whining even more when you are idle.
Good luck. Personally, I say return the thing and be sure you do it within the 21 day period. -

Are you 100% sure it's the hard drive that's making the noise? There's a good chance it's your video card. My desktop use to make a horrific buzzing noise, which I assumed was my HD but was actually my video card acting up.
Please be absolutely sure that it is in fact the HD, so you're not just going through the same process over and over again. -
Here ya go - be sure to read this: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&dn=1094197
You should have something in your BIOS settings where you can adjust the sleep state of the CPU. Be sure to try that as well to rule this out. -
I can hear a high pitch noise too when listening carefully with my ear near the laptop, but this noise is very quiet for me.

High pitch buzz disappears when AC is unplugged. Support made me run all these different tests until they decide to send me a new hard drive (twice). Maybe third time's a charm? If not, I will probably return the machine. Thanks.

actually i have tis problem when i got my xps 1210...
the sounds stops when i load WOW or using battery....
personel from dell came and change my mobo and the problem is solve.. -
Try the sound options. I had a chirp like coming from my dell bottom left side. Under master volume I had to mute either CD3, dock CD or line in. Anyways the chirping stopped.

Update:
i just received the notebook after sending it back to Dell. It says that the fan was replaced and should take care of the high pitched sound. However, the cover is all scratched up!! Contacted Dell and all they offered was to replace the cover. This is absurd. I am in the process of asking for a replacement. This really sucks.
