Hitachi SATA HD write cache in vostro 1400 is disabled and Hitachi Feature Tool can't run properly in 1400 to enable HD's write cache. Is there any other tool that could enable Hitachi HD's write cache?

you can't enable it via vista if it's not configured previously via Hitachi Feature Tool, that's where trouble comes from. your HD must be already enabled in firmware level.

Hitachi Feature Tool will be terminated due to command.com errors run in vostro 1400 with bootable Hitachi Feature Tool CD(even with newest version of 2.07).

Is it a command.com error? Or is it a missing command.com?

The new laptops do have AHCI, but for some reason you cannot enable Disk Write Cache :(

disk write cache should be enabled by Hitachi Feature Tool before you could choose write cache option in device manager. the problem is Hitachi Feature Tool doesn't work with vostro's new hardware.

Try putting the BIOS in ATA mode (as opposed to AHCI), then boot/run feature tool.

Post back if it worked :)

run a virus scan on your system (to make sure you dont have a trojan causing the memory error)

I was thinking that too, but I already installed on AHCI...and not sure which would be faster, AHCI or ATA w/ Write Cache...so I'm sticking with AHCI <_<

I run in AHCI (default), and I can't activate write caching on my 160gb 5400rpm drive ST9160821AS.

Default Re: Aspire 5920G Never allow me to enable HDD write cache
I have a T61 which has turbo memory. Vista 64, latest lenovo drivers. I am able to enable write caching.

I have not enabled "advanced performance" though which is the one that is sensitive to power loss.

tried AHCI driver from ibm website for T61 which is actually older intel version 7.0.1020, with no success. intel website offered newest version 7.6.1011 than dell website, but still no difference for enabling write cache.

today i checked two HP laptops which use intel 965 chips with ich8 driver(7.0.1020) and sata drives(one with seagate, the other with two hitachi sata 160GB), both laptops have write cache enabled. therefore it's possible to get write cache enabled with ich8+hitachi sata drive. the only problem seems to be how to get write cache enabled in hitachi firmware.
