Ok, so I know this is old news but I just called Dell Spare Parts and a nice guy named Jeffrey said that to upgrade to SLI 8800M GTX was $1,999.99!!!

That's more than most laptops and certainly enough for a great gaming computer!!!

Why are they so expensive right now?

My old man just bought me a 1730 with 1 8700M GT so I was hoping to upgrade to SLI 8800M GTX at some point.

Is it reasonable to expect the price to be much lower [as in maybe well under $1000] in a year or so?

EDIT: Even Jeffrey sounded really embarassed to tell me that the SLI cost $2K! He was like "uhh you may not want to spend this much... but its $2000!!!"

ehh I would have but my dad bought it for me.

So I got it for free.

Also, he's the type that if you suggest anything different about the gift he bought for you, he'd get really mad.

I am very grateful for it and it's MUCH better than my current laptop which struggles with WoW sometimes. At some point though, I'd like to go SLI 8800s if possible.

I'm about to receive a M1730 XPS with 1 8700M GT in it.

I'd like to upgrade to SLI 8800M GTX at some point but Dell Spare Parts just told me it was $2000 to upgrade.

Question is this... is it reasonable to expect this price to come down at some point, hopefully to the 500-600 range within the next year or so?

Well I guess it would come down in price when the next generation high end graphics cards are in the market.

Not to mention it's an "upgrade" from a 8700M which Dell would keep with them (I guess ?) which means the price should be EVEN lower than $1500 as Eleron suggested.

500-600 Range should work, especially on eBay. And yea, Prasad is right , about 1500 for the SLi, and selling the 8700M GT by 2-300 would make the total cost about 1200$.

This is the same Dell charging £130 ($260) for an 80GB ATA drive for an Inspiron 510m.

You're paying for both the hardware and tech support to back it up. It may seem like a rip-off to you, but some people may have a requirement to maintain a fully supported machine. You buy SLI 8800's off eBay and you can kiss your Dell warranty goodbye. This may not sound like a big deal, until something goes wrong.

I don't like it myself and I think it's a horrendous way to gouge money from after-sales transactions but it's clearly a business model that works and keeps Dell's R&D pockets lined, which keeps customers happier overall.

I paid mega-money being an M1730 early-adopter. I knew the risks and I've lost £1000 in value within 6 months. Not a problem because the planned life of my laptop is 3 years.

Anyone doing the official upgrade to 8800's is paying the early-adopter price. It's going to sting.

I just bought the M1730 in my sig about a week ago. I got it for $2500 since it was a scratch/dent from the Dell Outlet, but with an x9000 CPU and 8800GTX-SLI aboard, I couldn't resist. When I received the unit, I discovered a few cosmetic issues with it, a burned out gaming light, and a strange smudge under the LCD display's center above the pixels. Thank goodness I bought the 3-year complete care plan, since it covered all of the cosmetic issues and the LCD. The entire display assembly was replaced. The unit looks completely new asside from the green refurb sticker underneath.

With tax + 3-yr complete care, the total package was about $3000, but it was still quite a steal... brand new, the same system came out to $4200 without tax or extended warranties.

You got a green referb sticker!?!?! I got a red one :( haha ...

Speaking of ways Dell makes money, Does Dell make more money off of an outlet machine or brand new machine.

Or is is possible that a used machine in the outlet could be the same price as an identical new machine from them?

Ebay is a lot cheaper for upgrades (for the most part), but you definitely lose your warranty.
