No S-video output. There is a VGA output plug, but I haven't been able to make it work, using a VGA out to a (3 plugs) RCA in.....maybe I need something else??

It should work. Try swithching displays by using the FN+F8 Key on your keyboard.

What he means to say is that there is no S-Video output on his laptop. This is rather strange, as most laptop have S-Video output.

What is your TV like? LCD? Plasma? DLP? CRT? You can't simply use a VGA to RCA wire to transmit video - you'll need a converter. If you TV has HDMI or DVI input, use that as it provides better picture

I have a Philips 34" HDTV tube TV. It has S-video in but my Dell D630 does not come with S-video out. The VGA plug I got has 3 leads, all RCA ( blue, green red). There is no adapter so I do not know if I need one or what.
The TV has inputs on the side meant for ez hook up of extrernal devices. I can plug in my Canon digital camera into it and it works. I can plug in a VCR player into it also.
So, please tell me what I need to do??

I think your TV should have a VGA port itself. So just use a VGA cable from your PC monitor and connect your laptop to your TV.

Wow I never heard of a TV having a VGA port... anyway my TV is about 5 years old, so it predates some of the newer technology :(

to check if your tv has a vga input, look through the manual and search for PC INPUT, that's the techie term for it

search on avforums they specialize in this sort of thing

You can also find relatively inexpensive docks for the d630 on ebay that do have an s-video out port. If you picked up one of these you could directly connect it and not have to worry about any conversions. Also, a dock could be very handy.

That is a great solution. I also did check and there is no VGA port on the TV... too bad, that would make it ez.
I had a Targus docking station but it didn't seem to work and I returned it. It was a refurb for $30. All the docking stations on ebay are around $50-$60, but they are dedicated plug ins.
    Thanks !!!!!

TVs rarely have VGA ports in them... They mostly have S-Video IN, Composite In, YPbPr Component In, RF IN, HDMI

DVI is mostly used only for TFT LCD screens....

I wrote an email to Dell, waiting for reply, simply asking " How do I hook up to a TV?" I am surprised there isn't just a simple plug in, other than the docking station solution.

A VGA to S-Video IN is a rare type of cable if you ask me and since most ppl do not use it such cables are rare to come across....

If you could get hold of one such you must be lucky then :D

I just now realised that many latest HDTVs come with VGA ports too along with RCA, Component, HDMI and S-Video :D

My 1400 works great at 1080 res on my 42" 1080P Vizio LCD through the VGA port.

I wish the Vostro had a DVI or a HDMI port, but I can live with the VGA port.
