I believe the Media Direct program needs to be installed. People who own newer Dells will tell you. In any case, pressing those buttons should have NO effect on the notebook - it should not cause crashes even if you don't have the applicable program loaded. That's really odd.

I don't see how PgDn could not work...that's a core Windows key. You should probably try reformatting you computer...but I don't know how it got to be that buggy.

You need to install Dell's Quickset. You can download this from support.dell.com under the driver's page in the applications section.

My bad. Quickset, not MediaDirect. Thanks for correcting me. But is it common for Dells to crash Windows if that program it is not installed? My old 600m never had that issue...

I doubt you messed anything up permanently. Here is my advice - repair XP. It is very similar to formatting, but it does not erase your HDD or any files. It will repair registery, services, and other vital parts of XP. It basically formats XP back to orginial condition, but it will not delete any software that you have installed or any files. It might return WMP back to version 9 if you have upgraded and small changes like that, but any personal software that you installed will still be there.

    To Repair Windows:
    • Follow the steps in Post #5 regarding "Reformatting and Installing XP" in the format guide
    • Once you get to step number 5, select hit R instead of Esc.
    • This will NOT delete any files of your laptop. It is just repairing your system. Takes about a 1 Hour to complete
    • Once it is finished, you'll need to run Windows Update again and install all updates.

This should fix any problems with your OS system as long as it is not software related (i.e. Photoshop became corrupted and is causing problems,)

I have to jump on this and say these media keys are driving me nuts.

I can only control media when it is selected. Is my computer messed or do the keys only work when the window is in focus (itunes and media center) ?
