They're ok I guess. It's no replacement for a digital camera, but it takes good pictures for a webcam. The Dell webcams tend to suck when using it in darker places.

I think the iSight is only like 0.3 megapixels (640x480) and the Dell is 2 megapixels so I think the Dells are better...

The one that came with my Vostro 1500 is ass. You get a low quality image. That didn't bother me. You can set it to record at the lowest resolution possible and it still gets less than 9 frames per second. That pisses me off.

I have the vga one as built-into my m1330 LED screen. I am satisfied with the video quality. I don't use it to take pictures, just online webcam over aim. The picture quality in good light is very nice for a vga webcam. It has richer colors than the vga cam used in the sony sz cams. In darker conditions, the cam doesn't look good at all. But I just use it in a well lit room and the picture is very good.

I saw it's worth it because that will be one less thing to carry around and plugging in.
I just wish it was directional.

Can't say it better than that.

Worth it for convenience but for price/quality - not worth it.

Is the snapshot quality good enough to make out the text on the back of a book or a CD case?

Yes with good lighting conditions. As stated before the cams are weak in image quality during low light conditions. However, with good lighting they have IMHO great image quality in both video and snap shots. By tweaking advanced settings you can make the image look pretty good even in low light conditions. And as for the FPS's...only in good lighting (aka daylight or very well lit room) will you get the 30fps's claimed by Creative. Otherwise it will stick at ~7-10fps during video captures.
