Just a quick Survey to enlist everyone's boot up experiences.
    Please list
    -your system specs (CPU/Ram)
-number of services/programs you have at start up
-Close Estimate of start up time from time of typing in password to when every program is loaded on your desktop including both tray and desktop.

List any services/programs You've eliminated from startup that produced a noticable decreased start up lag.

    starting processes 100+
Start up time: really damn longer than it should
Actually from turning on power to the account log in screen is quite fast, around 5 secs, but after the log in, the screen actually locks for 3 seconds before vista loads. The screen will stay black for more than 5 before the start bar even shows up, and then another 5 at least before all the program icons shows up.

This is probably because of the 100+ services I have but I dont know which services I can disable wthout risking to productivity

    Experience anyone?

When you say "every program loaded", do you mean to the Welcome screen, or to the desktop with all the icons in the notification tray present, or what?

Every program loaded, not the welcome screen but the desktop when every program icon appears. Yeh for my notebook, the load to tge wekcine screen is quite fast. What happens after is comparable to a gold tournament...

Are you talking about a full boot of vista? It's impossible to start up vista in 10 seconds from touching the power button unless you were in sleep mode or something..

I think he means from the time you type your password in and log in to the time everything is fully loaded and ready to go.

If your talking about login time, I'm at around 5 seconds. Startup is somewhere around 30-40 from power button press to all programs loaded. I don't start up with much...

What is the point of this thread?

If you aren't happy with OS startup time, use Sleep or Hibernation like the rest of the world.

Heck, I've been using it in XP for years now.

Cold boot to the login screen, including the BIOS load, is about 45s for my 500m and 35s for my D830.

~35 seconds from power button to logon screen.
~20 seconds from password to fully loaded programs. (But I could cut it down to around fifteen by uninstalling QuickSet like I have in the past; I was all loaded, but then it was another 5-10 seconds till the quickset and touchpad icons loaded).

    :D

    Specs in sig.

I have not messed with services or msconfig since my last install a few days ago.

Launchy is the only app I have set to load on startup.

LOL..And I thought I was alone in this slow start up line. But still, the duo core succumbing to a mere 60 processes? If I had know this I would have waited for the ten core processor at least! decreasing the wait by five folds! if its ever gonna be out I'll be the first in line.

I dont think its healthy to leave your notebook in hibernation all the time right?

However, my desktop is certainly usable before all the icons load. I leave my laptop in Sleep throughout the day, and turn it off overnight.

Well actually i can use my laptop fine before all the icons appear, but just in a half paiinstalking and half on edge sort of way. Theres like a half second lag before anthing happens. But thats still a big improve compare to my old hp notebook. it would notoriously freeze for some time if i started using other programs during load. But thats with a 1.6 ghz single core and 512mb of ram.

That happened to me on my previous laptop with 1.5Ghz single core and 512mb.

All my tweaking has been offset by all my startup programs. So from power button and assuming i do a nice quick type of my Password i can get to fully loaded usable desktop is 45-50secons.

(Tried it three times, timed them)

you can easily make it shorter by shortening the multi-boot time in half or less. as well as remove the GUI during the boot. there are lots of things you can do to speed it up.

Hibernation saves the RAM to disk and shuts down, then loads it back into RAM when returning from hibernation so it's no more unhealthy than shutting down fully from a hardware point of view.

About 25-30 seconds to a completely usable desktop with any background programs/services fully loaded.

My notebook takes ~45 seconds from power button to all programs loaded.

I'm pretty satisifed with it, considering nothing in msconfig is tweaked and I also have NIS 2008. Go figure.

I've been using the sleep mode on my 1505 for over a year now with only occasional shutdowns. It's so much better than restarting every time. So far I've had no problems. I plan to do the same on my 1530 when it arrives early this week. :)
