Lately my laptop has been overheating and automatically shutting down a lot. I fear the fan is not working. Is there a way to test it? And how much would it cost to replace one?

EDIT: Are there any instructions how opening my laptop to see the fan?

Do you feel hot air coming out from the vents in your laptop?

Dell has their service manual readily available at support.dell.com and punching in your service tag.

Nope I don't feel any hot air coming out. I guess the fan really is broken. I don't know what to do now. I have no warranty and I'm scared of fixing it myself, I don't want to break anything.

Dell Service manual will guide you through it. Or send it into a repair shop if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. Though looking through the Studio 1555 service manual, pretty much replacing the fan and repasting CPU requires you to remove the motherboard.
